Tokyo Ghoul:re review
Spoilers(you have been warned).Tokyo ghoul:re started off slow and honestly not that great in my opinion.I didnt like Haise(kaneki) and the quinx and the rest of the characters seemed lackluster but as a tokyo ghoul fan of the previous series i kept reading.

With the introduction of familar characters like touka and nishio the series started to get better not to mention the flashbacks of kaneki we see in haise mind, add to that the revealation of Takizawa working for aogiri as one eyed ghoul was a superb twist and added flair to the story.

Still the series wasnt as good as its predecessor until the Tsukiyama Family Extermination Operation arc. This Arc single handedly made me forget all the flaws the series had. There so many good badass moments like Kanekis Awakening(which finally happened),Sad moments such as Shirazus death who became one of my favourite characters later on.

And finally not to mention the other crazy revelations after this arc just kept adding hype and sense into the story.

So heres my final verdict:
Tokyo ghoul:re starts off bad but i advise you to keep on reading because once you have completed a cartain arc the story keeps throwing reveals, and plot twists and hype moments every single chapter and whats great about them is that they are completely related to the previous series and make complete sense. So if you have read tokyo ghoul Then i HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SERIES AS WELL.It is an absolute masterpiece that i am willing to call it the fullmetal alchemist:brotherhood of manga:)

Tokyo Ghoul:re review
This review was written based of what i have read (from chapter 1 to chapter 61).
From what i have read on the manga i think the story is very well written and is more deep than what i though after reading the first series (tokyo ghoul). Basically this series has a lot more plot twists than the 1st series so lets get into it. As you may know this manga mc is sasaki wich you may know or not his real identity (which i am not going to spoil to people who haven't read it but you may guess it). The story concerns more into revealing more information on the aogiri true intensions and the so claimed one eyed king and also the meaning of ken kaneki, in my opinion (this may be a spoiler or not since its not been revealed) ken kaneki and rize have a direct relation with the one eyed king (i wont explain this since this is a manga review not a theory but theres alot theories on this over the internet).

The art is simply wonderful in my eyes i love the gore style and dark theme as well, the and over the timeskips in the manga you can see the change in the characters artistically.

The character development is fine you can see some relationships going deeper such eto's and sasaki's, the mc is constantly changing his state of mind meaning he's learning more and more about himself. There are a few useless characters that weren't developed and got ''forgotten'', while a few other characters haven't been getting the shine they deserved such as Touka, fuegushi and arima but i think their time will come specially arima since hes a major character but not so much was revealed...

This series are for sure my favorites in terms of enjoyment i love the ghoul concept and its originality also the anime's soundtrack which i listen to while reading the manga help me getting in tokyo ghoul's state of mind, well its an awesome manga with a awesome plot.

Overall this is one of the few mangas i am reading and well a very special one.

Tokyo Ghoul:re review
Oh hello there!
This is Tokyo Ghoul:re the continuation of Tokyo Ghoul! What surprises does it bring?

[Story-9/10]
For those who may have been slightly or majorly disappointed with Tokyo Ghoul's ending, here you shall go through catharsis and be completely healed! The story continues after some time when the first left of and things can be pretty confusing. New setting, new characters and goals. What happened? Its just part of the beauty of TG, everything is vague and is yet to be unveiled by you. Many more mysteries to uncover, motives to discuss and of course outcome to see. Gradually things built up one after another and everything starts to make more and more sense. Literally like a puzzle, you are collecting fragments for the final picture and this time the more you collect the more you have to do again afterwards. While it may not have as much symbolism as in the first one it is still one of a kind.

[Art-10/10]
Not much to say apart from the notice that drawings have improved by a good bit, if I may from a great spectacle to perfection! The smoothness in detail and contrast in setting is just filling with fervour and admiration.

[Characters-10/10]
This time around we have yet even more characters with different goals and dreams in mind. Each one once again let on the main stage with highlights - backstories done in order of importance and development of the MC and those who surround him is safe to say is 2x more than before. Both physical and mental changes ( negative and positive ) occur, some relationships are nourished to blossom others are destroyed.

[Enjoyment-10/10]
Even though this part is judged as inferior to the first one I enjoyed it much more, perhaps because of the way that the MC and his close ones were treated as well as the ending which this time around is the exact opposite of Tokyo Ghoul - it's bright!

[Overall-9.8/10]
You fell in love with this tragic piece of art and you long-awaited reunion with true happiness is here!

Tokyo Ghoul:re review
Tokyo ghoul re...one of the few manga which i must say, left a big hole in my heart.Even after reading it,i found it difficult to let go of of the world which Sui Ishida has created. That is how much of a impression it made on me,it was really hard and difficult to come to the terms that i have read it and the amount of the emotions which took me were quite overwhelming. Is it a perfect story?Of course its not, as well as the main character himself. He is not perfect,he is a mess.A mess of all emotions he kept bottled deep inside him, which he had to keep deep down in order to survive in this cruel world. How can i not relate to him?I know its quite subjective from me to say this, but arent we all like that?Forced to forget our inner child and everything we feel in order to succeed in the world? And in the end,we cant help but embrace both of the sides we have became, both the child and something we are not.
Even few years from now on,i am convinced that this story and its characters will stay memorable as to the time i first read it.I loved the art and the improvement ,compared to the Tokyo ghoul manga, this one seemed much more detailed and i i cant get enough of it.One of the things which i loved the most, was without a doubt, the progression of toukas and kanekis relationship, the care and love both hold for one another.I think their actions say more that enough, there is no need for words.Secondly,i cant help but love Hide for everything he did to help his best friend and without him,Kaneki would have died multiple times before even Tokyo ghoul re has started.I was more than enough satisfied to see the development of certain characters and i must admit it that even Furuta himself was alone a very interesting character.
Did i enjoy reading it?Yes,i did, even though the ending itself felt rushed,i enjoyed this series with all my heart and i am really looking forward to a new manga from Sui Ishida

Tokyo Ghoul:re review
-THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS-

Tokyo Ghoul:re is a fitting continuation of Tokyo Ghoul in all ways. The plot is suspensful and driven, if a bit slow, the characters are vibrant and unique and the art continues to improve. If I had to name one problem with it, it would be that the sheer number of characters introduced is overwhelming and slows down the plot at first.

Continuing on that note, the plot at first is slow, but picks up quickly and builds up plenty of suspense. Actually, it builds up so much suspense that the current plot events started to feel boring in comparison to the possible future events. The switch to the perspective of the Doves is refreshing and keeps things interesting.

The art is good. Nothing more nothing less. It improves steadily throughout the series, but the action scenes can be hard to follow.

Now the characters, which are both the best and worst parts of this series. Haise Sasaki, a first class ghoul investigator, is the protagonist. He's a sweet guy, probably too sweet, actually, who enjoys reading. Akira Mado from Tokyo Ghoul is his mentor of sorts along with his superior.

Haise is in charge of an experimental squad known as the Quinx. Haise's subordinates are: Urie Kuki-an antisocial self-serving guy, who cares very little for others-, Ginshi Shirazu (An easily manipulated nice guy who gets angry a bit too quickly), Saiko Yonebayashi (A lazy otaku finally given the chance to do what she wants, which is be lazy) and Tooru Mutsuki (A nice, if easily intimidated guy who dislikes violence).

The characters are well-developed--except for Mutsuki, which I'll explain later--Urie in particular changes a lot. And they're easy to love. But as time goes on, Haise plays an increasingly large role.

All in all, it's a good series with plenty of gore and symbolism.

A few warnings: There is gore, blood, necrophilia... everything you'd expect of TG. And some events can be considered transphobic.

Now. Mutsuki. There are minor spoilers below regarding the transphobia. If you don't want to read the spoilers, then you can stop reading here. There's nothing else besides that.

Mutsuki is trans, which I was excited about, but the treatment of Mutsuki's character once you hit chapter 114 gets to be questionable. Hopefully, it gets better somehow, but it doesn't look like it will.
To generalize, Mutsuki misgenders himself in a context that heavily implies he thinks of himself as female.

Tokyo Ghoul:re review
WARNING! SPOILERS!

"What is right... what is wrong... you can't easily tell the difference. That's why you must keep thinking, whether what you are doing is right or not. That act itself, alone, can be called right."

When I heard that there will be a sequel to Tokyo Ghoul I was pretty excited thought I didn't really want a sequel, since I was okay with the finale. But what I got in Tokyo Ghoul:re was something that I never expected. With the beginning of Tokyo Ghoul:re, the story was driven to a point which audience wasn't ever expecting. We all thought Kaneki was brutally murdered (and yeah it didnt made sense at all when he came back to life) but he actually turned out to be now working as a ghoul investigator in CCG, lost his memories and CCG is hiding his true identity from him, unless he might cause huge trouble. HE EVEN HAD HIS OWN SQUAD??!! Yeah, now he is also the mentor of the ghoul investigator squad called Quinx, and its full of BRRROKE teenagers. We have Urie, the super edgy maniac only thinking about promotion. Saiko, the low budget e-girl but she's a cutie. Mutsuki,aah... she starts as a innocent girl, but ends up as a fake ass kaneki. And Shirazu, only pure boi after Kaneki (now called Sasaki). Yeah, we had a quite fun start. A brand new cast and many new villains. Oh boy, I hope Haise gets his memories back and turn back to Kaneki ... Well, nope not a good thing may happen from that. But everything turns into a massacre when Kaneki turns back and Shirazu dies, later on a lotta fights and confrontions blah, blah Dragon Arc and the Final Arc were trash... Tokyo Ghoul:re is ruined in the end.

Story:
I was sooooo excited since the beginning of each chapter, wondering if this sequel will be worthy. The first few arcs were great. New squad, problematic newbie investigators also dumb villains. It might be a squad full of problem children but Quinx was a real good thing. Its much better than Anteiku cast in the first part, they are more relevant and symphatic. The time they spend with Sasaki and their meetings... It was very good. Then important operations and BOOOM! Shirazu dies. It broke me but im totally fine with his death since it wasnt a stupid death. And Kaneki comes back, goes mad, kills Arima (not actually but yea), then the useless arcs start. I personally believe the story was extremely prolonged for nothing. Ishida probably write the Dragon Arc so he could make an excuse to revive Kaneki again. Which is, he chose the worst excuse by turning him into a gigantic cock & ball dragon. The whole Dragon Arc was suprisingly optimistic despite the brutal damage dragon causes. I mean, like all of the CCG and GOAT organization gathered forces and thats a pretty big thing since like the entire Tokyo Ghoul was made for ghouls vs. ccg. I barely remember what exactly happened in the final arc. And reviving Rize and making her fight as the final boss was a very rushed idea. You can easily realize that how small her role was thought she came back to life. I believe she only talked a few words yet she was the vital element of the Tokyo Ghoul. The whole story happened thanks to her and she was the least relevant character in :re. The final chapter was kinda satisfying. It really didn't have any cons. We got to know how everyone ended up except a few people but yeah it was fine. But the rest of the manga at some point is worthless. Not the first arcs with quinx, once the thing with goat organization began I was bored of reading this manga I used to be in love with. It's ruined.

Title:
Yeah I actually wanted to talk about this in story part. But I noticed in the chapter called "Title" where we see Kaneki transforming into Dragon and covering the whole Tokyo and violating everywhere, he became the "title". He became the ghoul who is devouring the Tokyo. The Tokyo Ghoul. So, I believe this idea was always in Ishida's head since the very beginning, and its getting me real mad since Dragon Arc was in my opinion the worst arc in the story. I can't believe Ishida wrote this holy grail manga just to bring up this trash arc. I didn't even notice that manga took place in Tokyo.

Art:
Near the last arcs of :re, we realize that Ishida's artwork has once again leveled up. This time fans were quite unhappy with the new art style. But I always love Ishida's style. Every cover of Tokyo Ghoul:re volumes were incredibly beautiful and needed attention. The artwork inside the manga, otherwise can sometimes be quite different from the covers. But anyway I don't believe Ishida ever dropped quality on artwork of tokyo ghoul. In :re, he reached another level and became even better. I'm very happy for him.

Plot twists:
We now know that One Eyed King is originally a title that is inherited from one to another. I was already aware that Arima might be the king, but it was eventually confirmed in :re it was true. I really hate Arima, being secretly associated and admired by Aogiri and also working for CCG. And Furuta/Souta turning out to be the main antagonist was a great idea. I really liked him as a villain and never expected him to show up. He had great potential, yet he was underrated af. I can't believe him being so underrated yet antagonist. How could the fanbase be so ignorant?

Cast:
I really loved the cast and characters' development. Such as Urie was a jackass, but once Shirazu dies he finally becomes a better person, more caring and compassionate. Mutsuki was innocent girl yet she was devastated once Haise is gone, and now its Kaneki. So she turns into "female badass kaneki" . For Kaneki, I really liked his new persona Haise. He is completely different from initial Kaneki. He is more like a leader and confident. Once he gets back his memories, and gone mad, the story of :re finally began. I don't know if making him go berserk was a fine idea but we were all waiting for that moment. Once his fight with arima ended Kaneki becomes calm and we really get him back that moment. I really hate Arima and his relationship with Kaneki. He said to Kaneki that he can kill him in just 2 seconds, yet he commit suicide. It was very hard to see Arima, a very stonehearthed character having something for a ghoul. Also we got our best boi back, Amon Kotaro, yet he is irrelevant af. Damn Ishida, why dont you evaluate this god tier character? We also got homeboy Takizawa back. But now he is a psycho ghoul. His appearence somehow reminded me of jeff the killer but whatever. After a lot of damage he causes, he finally turns into an ally. Yeah, that side of Takizama, he was a f*cking maniac, I really hate him in :re, even thought he turned into an ally. I was almost forgetting Shirazu and Saiko. They are both one of the best characters in :re. I felt real bad for Shirazu when he died, all reason he fought for was so he could cure his sister (which eventually happened) . And Furuta, he is probably one of the best villains I've ever seen. He is a greatly written character, yet so underrated. His lunatic side is both funny and scary.

Eto Yoshimura (wtf is the deal with her)
Eto is my least favorite character in Tokyo Ghoul, but unfortunately she is a fan-favorite character. But anyway, I hate him so much. She tortures people, she is sadistic and even made his father an experiment for ghoul transplantations. But anyway, in the final arc we finally got to see her after a while, yet we couldn't understand what exactly happened to her. Was she dead or idk brainwashed? Probably she survived thought she was absent in very final chapter. Also I don't think Ishida would have a reason to kill her off.

Tokyo Ghoul:re review
Story 7

Great at the very beginning since part 1 left on a cliffhanger. However as the story progressed, it's became worse and worse, It's almost like Ishida was forced to rush all of chapters out by the execs just to get this thing over with. Overall, it started out pretty good because it was shrouded with mystery, but after all of those things are revealed, it sort of loses its spark and became boring.

Art 8

Now this is where Ishida excels. I've never been so captivated by the way he puts details on every chapter. I like the gritty style honed from part 1 and basically mastered it in part 2. With all that said, sometimes, it can get a little bit confusing because of the inconsistent quality. For most of the time it looks well put together, sometimes it looks like he literally just made a sketch, does a bit of shading, and have his editor publish it. So far, its an improvement comparing it to part 1.

Characters 5

As I said before, it started out pretty good because you can actually keep with what's happening. I didn't find any of the characters annoying at first because they had great chemistry with each other. Even though most of the new added characters were just characters from part 1 with a different name, that really didn't bother me. But dear god, once Ishida started adding more characters, I couldn't keep up anymore. It's almost like he's filling in plot holes by adding a new character. It almost ruined the whole thing for me. He could've just kept the essential characters and beefed them up rather than introducing one character after another. Also, in some chapters, Kaneki doesn't even show up because he's focusing on different characters, which i really don't care about.

Enjoyment 6

Jesus christ, once the whole thing concluded, I basically was shocked by how terrible it was UGH. The whole thing jumped the fucking shark the moment ishida did the bait and switch bullshit. For this manga to have a somewhat of a happy ending, it doesn't sit right with me. Furthermore, the amount of fucking dialogue in each chapter feels like im reading a novel. with all that said, the ending sucked for me.

Overall 7

If you're curious what happened to your beloved Kaneki after part 1, this is a great somewhat of a continuation. Since it had great set ups at the very beginning. It's gonna keep you wanting for more answers and all that nonsense. However, if you're looking for "Satisfying" conclusion of the whole series, (It really depends on what kind of ending you prefer) but personally I wouldve liked for this whole thing to have and end of eva kinda of ending. but what I got was some fucking sitcom ending nonsense. Save yourself some time and stop once the dialogue fills the whole chapter.

Tokyo Ghoul:re review
Okay, so I promised myself I wasn't gonna give :re the pleasure of having its own review, but I got some OPINIONS I need to spill about this garbage excuse for a sequel and I'm sure I would regret it for the rest of my life if I didn't vent it all out now. So, without further ado, here goes:

[Spoilers for TG part 1 ahead]

Story: 3/10

The plot of :re goes as follows: after Kaneki gets owned by Arima at the end of part 1, he is supposedly brainwashed through some unknown means and resurfaces as Haise Sasaki, an investigator for the CCG. He has none of Kaneki's memories and the story revolves around Sasaki rediscovering and regaining his former identity. Or at least, it should. There's just so much other shit going on at the same time that I can hardly bring myself to care! Every arc is a long, drawn-out battle that feels like it's being overly violent just for the hell of it, and any actual character moments to be had are forcefully shoved in while that character is getting their limbs torn from their bodies or whatever, so it all feels very jarring. The 2 year timeskip between the end of the first series and the beginning of :re isn't exactly smooth either, and details that definitely should have been made clear in part 1 are only touched upon briefly, such that it feels like Ishida's saying "oh shit I forgot uhhh...there! That should keep em busy". At the end of the day, it feels like a shonen that's trying way too hard to be a seinen, which is only punctuated by the forced feel-good ending where humans and ghouls are suddenly at peace (and also fighting a convenient non-sentient common enemy). Yeah, Kaneki deserved to be happy in the end, but the way it was executed felt like a massive copout.

Art: 9/10

No complaints here. Ishida really grew into his own in the drawing department if not writing, and he does a great job at expressing the insanity that too many of his characters are suffering.

Character: 2/10

Jesus H Christ, where to fucking START. Let's unpack Kaneki/Sasaki first. We already know from the first series that Kaneki, like most college freshmen, is in the midst of an identity crisis. :re takes this to another level with Sasaki, which is all well and good, but THEN has him undergo roughly 15 other personality changes over the course of the story (I'm exaggerating, but who counted?) He goes from kind, to ruthless, to psychotic and back again ad nauseum. This would have been a great opportunity to have him develop some sort of DID, especially since at one point it's implied that all these different facets of himself are aware of each other. However, I don't really trust Ishida to write that in a respectful manner, if we're being honest. So, Kaneki remains a parody of himself.

:re introduces several important characters into the mix, the most notable being the Quinx, Sasaki's half-ghoul squadmates who are studying under him. For the most part, I actually liked them, with one exception being Mutsuki. Mutsuki I was at first pleasantly surprised by since, you know, CANON TRANS MAN REP, but then Ishida completely mishandles him by making him go full yandere for Sasaki for no reason other than ow the edge. Also he seemingly decides to live as a girl by the end but I just brushed that off as a dysphoria episode. Urie started off as a little shit but he gradually grew into one of my favorites, and Saiko's a sweetheart, so I have no complaints about them, but I will complain about Shirazu dying because fuck it was too soon.

As for everyone else...nothing remarkable. Most of them are either one-dimensional red shirt cops who get way more screentime than they deserve or a 14-year-old's idea of what a psychopath is, and god am I ever grateful that I didn't discover the series at that age. The more likeable characters are either sidelined completely (like Touka, Nishio, Ayato, etc.) or are involved in so many different factions that I can't be fucked to care. Seriously, all of this worldbuilding would have been really helpful to know about in part 1!

And last but certainly not least, OH GOD DEFINITELY NOT LEAST, is best boy Hideyoshi Nagachika. After showing up as a hallucination multiple times and generally being an ever-present reminder of Kaneki's gay yearning, he finally shows up literally 75% of the way through (actually rounds up to 76%. I calculated.) and proves to be WAY MORE INTERESTING than any of the other humans in the story without even trying. I wanna hear the story of how he managed to masquerade as a ghoul for 4 WHOLE YEARS all while evading capture from the Bureau Chief of the CCG AND gathering information from ghouls who would be able to tell instantly that he was human. All for Kaneki. Hide, you are fucking awesome, and I don't care what Ishida thinks of you. Seriously, Ishida? You only choose to reveal his backstory in the FUCKING EPILOGUE? Even the anime gave him more dignity when they killed him off so his crying fangirls could give them free advertising via hundreds of sadboy AMVs.

And yea, since this was a hotly contested subject while :re was still being written: Kanehide should have been canon. 100%. Touka had no chemistry with Kaneki and the part where she tells Hide when she fell in love with him is a glaringly obvious retcon. I wouldn't have even cared that they got together if there was any buildup AT ALL, but nope. They have sloppy friends-with-benefits sex in an abandoned warehouse, then when it turns out Kaneki knocked her up they decide to get married like they're goddamn Catholics or something. Kanehide, on the other hand, has a solid foundation and PLENTY of homoeroticism to boot. There is a clear choice here. That is all.

Enjoyment: 3/10

Dear lord, this was a fucking slog after around chapter 50 or so. Even the action didn't do it for me after this point. I lost track of who was in what faction after a while so I quite frankly didn't care about who was fighting who, not to mention there was little characterization in between. I would have dropped somewhere around the 90 mark if it wasn't for the promise of Hide content. God, I love that boy to death. I'm sorry Ishida did you so dirty.

Overall: 3/10

Could have very easily been worse.

Tokyo Ghoul:re review
Tokyo Ghoul:re is a sequel to the infamous Tokyo Ghoul manga, as obvious as this sounds. This manga has been getting a lot of hate for it’s difficulty and difference from the first manga, since so many new characters get introduced as well with a completely new perspective on the world of Tokyo Ghoul. It’s true that remembering everyone that has been introduced in the first few volumes is quite confusing, but trust me, remembering every new character and knowing who they are and what they do just enhances the experience so much more than you’d ever think it would.

The store of TG:RE this time, starts off with a new perspective, mainly focusing on the CCG and a new breed of controlled Ghouls called the Quinx. The story slowly and slowly switches back over to the original perspective on the Ghouls but honestly the new perspective on the CCG is a refreshing aspect that I really adored, even more so than the previous Ghoul world.
It’s story is written in a very realistic way, in my opinion. It starts off pretty on quite a joyful note and slowly seeps into darker tones and as you go further into the story, if you retrospect to the first few chapters, it really is depressing. The plot twists weren’t anything special, probably because I skimmed over it, but some of them were unexpected like ------

Honestly the characters in this manga is what I love the most, they’re just so fun to read an so unique and interesting, I enjoyed every single character in this manga, especially Juuzou, even if he didn’t get as much “screen-time” as i would’ve liked. The text is fun to read, it’s a great experience to voice each individual in your head and they all have amazing character designs.

Now the art and panel composition is a bit different than the prequel, it’s a lot more confusing and some of the art isn’t too clear on what they are until you really look at it, which is to say, you can’t read this fast. You’d have to really pay attention to this manga to really grasp the full understanding of the story, which is good in it’s own ways but sometimes you want to voice act the thing like it was an anime, and this manga doesn’t very well allow you to do this, but with enough practice of course it gets a lot easier, and more satisfying as well.
Otherwise the art is beautiful, some big panel shots are just marvelous and Ishida’s art is always welcomed as usual.

Since I’m an English reader, I didn’t get to experience the Japanese lettering and all that jazz (Which is apparently excellent and very clever). But I can tell you one thing, I haven’t seen one bad translation of TG:RE since the first chapter. The translation team did a wonderful job translating this, especially impressive considering most of what I read were fan translations. This manga is adored and I love everyone for putting so much effort into letting everyone else read this.

And all together I just think this manga was incredibly fun to read, I enjoyed a majority of the chapters and felt real emotions from this story. If you’re a Tokyo Ghoul fan (Which I assume you automatically thought about reading this), or have seen the :re anime, which is underwhelming to say the least, I highly recommend the manga instead. And with that, I’m off to read more manga I’ll enjoy to the fullest and review.

Tokyo Ghoul:re review
I think Tokyo Ghoul Re: (as well as the original Tokyo Ghoul) is a great example of how 'quality' and 'enjoyment' are not always related. I could criticize a variety of different things from the plot, the characters, the pacing, the art etc with ease, HOWEVER...I still had a damn fun time reading this series!

(I even cried 4 times but we won't talk about that)

BUT, as a queer person, and as a woman, I would like to bring up some criticism on how this series handled it's queer and female characters.

(some slight SPOILERS ahead)

As this is a story written primarily for male readers by a cis-male author, I didn't exactly have high expectations to begin with so it’s not like I’m surprised that the representation left something to be desired.

I wanted to love the female characters in Tokyo Ghoul so bad and for a while, I did love some of them. But it was very short-lived.
Women in Tokyo Ghoul are sidelined from the beginning as there just aren’t that many of them. As a story that has 50+ characters named, I can count the number of important female characters on just two hands and all of them end up falling into fairly simple categories. Let’s break them down.
Touka: Damsel, Love Interest
Hinami: Victim
Rize: Victim, Villain, Psycho, Love Interest
Akira: Love Interest
Eto: Victim, Villain
Roma: Villain, Psycho
Itori: Villain
Mutsuki(?): Victim, Psycho
(Saiko is not on this list because she is the singular well-written female character imo)

I would like to give some credit where credit is due because, in the original Tokyo Ghoul, Touka, and Akira have fantastic stories with great character development but by the time we get to Re:, that all becomes pointless.

Touka was so strong in the first series that I couldn’t believe how weak and pointless her entire character became in Re:. She didn’t do anything to further her own character and story through the entire 16 volumes and she basically becomes a prop for Kaneki to further his story instead. Even more, her entire relationship with Kaneki is so vanilla flavor bland. Where was their romance? I don’t know. Kaneki said he’d be sad if she died once. Huh. I guess that’s all they needed to call it a romance. As I’ll mention later, Kaneki has such emotional and inspiring relationships with other (male) characters, it just showcases that Ishida has no clue how to write an engaging female character.

Akira also starts off really strong in Tokyo Ghoul. She is independent, fights her own battles, is always vocal about her opinion. However, she is only shown to have strong ties with three characters throughout the entire series; one is her dead father, and another is her love interest. And the further we get into the story the less she begins to exist outside of those relationships. It was disappointing to see her story, just like Touka’s, spiral down and become nothing more than a romance with a male character.

Now let’s talk about the absolute MESS that is Mutsuki in both the context as a female character and/or a queer character. My use of ‘and/or’ may seem a little confusing, but Mutsuki is honestly a very confusing character.
Near the beginning of the manga, I really liked Mutsuki. They were actually my favorite new character for a while, especially when it was revealed that they were trans. The problem is that by the end...I actually don't even know if they were trans or a cis-woman dressing up as a man. I say this for a couple of reasons. The most prominent being that when we learn about Mutsuki's terrible past of being abused and raped by their father. It's implied that it was this experience that led Mutsuki to present themselves as a man to begin with, aka: their trauma made them trans.
I don't think I need to explain why this is bad.
There are also moments later in the manga where Mutsuki 'comes out' and says "I'm a girl" rather than saying "I am trans" or when they have flashbacks of being found out by Kaneki to be a girl and just...Is this character actually trans or does Sui Ishida just THAT bad at writing female characters??
Which brings me to my other point. IF Mutsuki is in fact, a cis-hetero woman, their entire story arc becomes incredibly misogynistic. Because in that case, They become the stereotypical ‘scorned woman’ turn ‘psycho ex-girlfriend’. Tokyo Ghoul is a story full of psychos, but many of them are lovable, interesting, or compelling, and Mutsuki is none of those things. They are a character who suffered extensive abuse at the hands of others, fixated all of their feelings of worth to one other person to cope, and then went completely mental when they noticed that person notice someone else. It’s just so incredibly BORING and not the kind of story that should be given to a leading character that readers are supposed to like to some degree. I was just so disappointed in Mutsuki’s character completely. (ALSO, I didn’t know how to shoehorn in this point as well but, again, if Mutsuki’s character is in fact just a girl dressing up as a boy, Kanae von Rosewald has the exact same storyline as them with her ‘living as a boy’ trope. Was this scenario really needed twice??)

I would also like to briefly talk about Tsukiyama, Hide, and Nico who are all openly queer or arguably queer-coded characters.

Tsukiyama and Hide both have some very ~ q U e S t I o N a B L e ~ interest in our MC. Both characters have gone above and beyond and out of their way to assist and get closer to him. You can, of course, make the "they're just friends!" argument but...come on. Hide dedicated his life to finding, and helping Kaneki, let him literally eat his face, and straight-up said he loved him. Tsukiyama, while openly crying, begged Kaneki to not fight because he was afraid Kaneki would die, and when he thought he did die, he went mad and became a depressive recluse for two years. He also was the ONLY ONE who spoke up to defend Kaneki’s intentions to protect everyone including humanity when the ghouls were chanting to martyr Kaneki as vengefully killing humans.
It is so obvious that both of these characters have very complex and intense emotions towards the MC and I would argue that they are portrayed much more passionately and beautiful than any of the female characters like I mentioned earlier regarding Touka. I honestly don’t think Ishida wanted readers to read these characters as being romantically attracted to Kaneki but it just goes to show ONCE AGAIN Ishida’s inability to write female characters at the same level as his male characters while simultaneously shafting queer characters and their romances.

And then, last but not least, we have Nico. The only character that is directly called queer in the realm of the story. Having openly queer characters is important, BUT I shouldn't have to explain why Nico is offensive. My eyes rolled so far into the back of my head as soon as he made his first appearance. He is very obviously an Onee-stereotype in his appearance and mannerisms. He is also overly sexual when interacting with other male characters which is a boring gay stereotype. He frequently appears as a villain in the story which again is another boring gay stereotype, and then finally, he receives no love story in the end which is - you guessed it ANOTHER boring gay stereotype. (Tsukiyama and Hide also did not get love stories!)

I want to end this by saying again. I love Tokyo Ghoul. I thought it was an incredibly fun story and one that I would recommend to others easily. But just because you like something enough to recommend it, doesn’t mean you can’t be critical of it.

Tokyo Ghoul:re review
First of I just want to say, I love the original Tokyo Ghoul Manga. I will mention my main gripes with this story in comparison with the original TG.

CHARACTERS
RE like the TG had a shit ton of characters. However, unlike TG, a lot of characters were completely meaningless in the story. They didn't really serve any purpose. For example, Touka is completely negligible in RE, she is basically Kaneki's( my G) trophy wife who didn't really do anything in RE. Characters like V, Furata, and Washuu were painted up to be the big bags, but in the end, they did as much as my nan on a rainy night in Stoke.

Story
Now, this is my biggest problem with RE. In the first 60 sixty chapters or so, it's on par with TG. But when a certain person dies, (you know who I am talking about if you have read the manga), the story takes a complete nosedive. Ishida must have said fuck it, and there RE off a cliff. That's how shitty it was. It turned into some shonen-Esque manga. It was now filled to the brim with fight scenes that take away from character development and such. Also. Ishida starts doing a lot of ass pulls. Death post chapter 60 is now completely meaningless, characters start coming back from the dead like Kabuto was spamming reanimation jutsus. The ending was also so bad like you wouldn't believe it. Ishida just wraps everything into a neat little bow in a way that makes no sense. Although, I was happy that my G, Kaneki finally got the happiness he so deserves.

I rated it a 7/10 just because I love what he did with the OG, and because Kaneki and co deserve this score, and also because of Kaneki's pure happiness. If you haven't noticed yet, I love Kaneki. Sad that RE faded out.

Tokyo Ghoul:re review
"The sky next to tragedy is a clear blue"

Tokyo Ghoul:re is probably among the most poetic sequels to anything I've ever read, thanks to the talent of Mr Sui Ishida. While the original was outstanding in its own right, the sequel not only parallels and overall enriches it, it serves as a thematic addition that makes it a memorable work of fiction. Without spoiling anything, it takes the tragedy of the original and expands on persevering through hardships.

One major criticism is the amount of characters, which I can understand, however Ishida intended it to be a manga to digested slowly to appreciate each one's journey and see how they parallel with the protagonists. Do not blaze through this one, the subtleties of constant character development is probably the highest point of the experience.

The other main criticism is how the story ends, or more specifically how things go after chapter 85ish. The poor mangaka was fighting burnout and exhaustion, and said specifically that he wouldn't have the energy to finish. As someone who has dabbled in writing a while back, I can understand what he's talking about. There are a couple spots where his exhaustion really comes out, being the last chunk of Rushima Island and the Clown Arc, but he is able to get it together for the big moments. Considering all of that, the final arc was something that had me on the edge of my seat every week (to the point it was almost obsessive haha). Sure there were some flaws along the way in a writing perspective, but I can't be mad that it ended the way I personally wanted it to. Best I can describe the ending is flawed but beautiful in my personal opinion.

Overall, Tokyo Ghoul has been a major part of my life for the past 6 years and I can't thank Mr Sui Ishida enough for the ride. It helped me through some rough spots and taught me things about pain, loss, perseverance and seeking happiness. Despite its shortcomings in places, it remains my favorite manga of all time.

Tokyo Ghoul:re review
After watching the anime a long time ago, when it came out (in 2014 I think) and abstaining for a long time to read the manga, I decided to read the whole manga, and it was really worth it (I started it months ago, and when I read it I was still broadcasting , but then it finished publishing D:)

There's major's spoilers in here, read at your own risk.

It had a great ending, Kaneki gave everything to achieve his goal, he died many times, was dismembered, tortured to the point of mental breakdown among other things, but he proved to be very strong and in the end everyone needed him, and in the end what Furuta sait it was fulfilled, the Ghouls and humans will only join if they have an enemy in common, he wanted something so Kaneki would become that enemy, but in the end it was the bastard children of the dragon (Poor people do not massacre them xd) It called my attention that is believed that there was already a war like that and a similar conflict that took the world to the creation of the Ghouls, maybe it has something to do with the underground city, that first king of an eye and those dwarfs that they could barely talk (?) I hope we get to know that in some special or something. Some things were unclear for me (maybe I did not pay attention). I was sure that old man Yoshimura was still alive when Eto captured him and later on he was still alive when Kanou experimented with him.

The story had several enemies who had a pretty elaborate psychology, but I think that's why they could not be given a good ending. Kanou killed himself wtf? We knew his motivations, his reason for being a doctor and wanting to break that bird cage they were all in (Kanou's life ideology), but did he really wanted that? To cause so much suffering to Takizawa, Shiro, Kuro, Kaneki, for something that he never got to see if it was done or not, (in the end it was achieved with the appearance of the new enemy in common.)

The story had many nuances, it was not only black and white/good and evil. Kaneki and Amon were the clear example, Touka, Hinami and Akira. Both ghouls and researchers and humans struggled to survive, all snatched, all removed from others for their survival. The ghouls because they are born as monsters eat men and pigeons and humans for revenge and because they had to justify their salaries.

Furuta also gave his reasons, but in my opinion they were not enough to show why he was so twisted, wanting to destroy everything because your lifespan is very short due to the incest of your family and because you were not going to be able to be with the woman you loved (Incest) and she really did not wanted to be with you? In my opinion I had a bit of pity towards him because he just wanted to had a normal life, but it would have been better if he was really moved by the ambition of chaos in its purest form. The approach that Furuta and Kaneki had at the end was very good, yes.

Rize we never heard from her again after Yomo had her in captivity with him, I honestly think that Kaneki had her on an altar, in the elegant, intelligent and classy way that Kaneki saw her in his mind and in the representation that Kaneki made himself in his head to come to reason sometimes, I think it was really a version of the character very far from what she really was in the whole series, a stupid glutton, who did not contribute anything and who was missing in almost the whole story. I think she only existed so that Kaneki could forgive both her and Kanou, and to help Kaneki regain composure at critical moments.

Kaneki adopting personalities of the people who made him suffer the most, this psychopathic shaping that they introduced in Kaneki, and maybe in Tooru as well was very good, from Yamori, Arima even a bit of Juuzo, Kaneki made several personalities throughout history, all this with a deeper background that began with a psychopath that tortured Yamori, and that ultimately had its final deserved. I think if they had gone into a little more detail with all this would have been great, maybe Kaneki if he was a psychopath in a way?

Anyway, I hope they explain a lot of things that were not explained, because this manga really needs it. '' Let's say that if you were to write a story with me as the main character, it would certainly be a tragedy. '' Honestly I am happy that I do not end everything in tragedy. Good story about compassion, self acceptance, accepting and learning how to live with others despite the differences there might be. and that we all need to be loved and needed somehow.

Tokyo Ghoul:re review
After 112 chapters, (I followed it weekly) I found like it was time to drop in my own two cents after seeing several reviews that didn't reflect the true scale of this sequel.

At a first glance, yes, it does seem weaker than its predecessor. Some new kid; Haise Sasaki is running the block, and many people were confused and pretty disappointed when Ken Kaneki wasn't returning.

Well, heads up people.

Without spoiling anything, all I can say is Ken Kaneki is definitely prominent in this series, and I mean as a character, not some fading memory like good ol' Rize. It took a while to get to that certain point, but that point is definitely there.

The art is great. The story is pretty good. The cast...well. The original cast returns (very much later), but Tokyo Ghoul:re introduces us to a rather large cast. I'll be honest and say it; I can only remember one or two of their names, out of like, thirty. Some had strong moments, for say a chapter or two, but then are left forgotten, which is really disappointing seeing lost potential.

This manga also loves to hop around between scenes, so don't expect to see your favourite character balling every chapter.

Overall, the majority of the new cast is trash, can't remember a tenth of their faces. Some were good, don't get me wrong, just most of them were easily forgettable and rapidly developed before being abandoned. The original cast from the previous series appear very late in the series but have very minimal interaction and dialogue so far. It's still great for what it is, and am still looking forward to the next chapters.

Tokyo Ghoul:re review
Good evening
I just finsihed Re and wantet to talk about it (chapter 179)
Story: Re takes place a few years after Tokyo Ghoul
Tokyo Ghoul's story (in short) Kaneki has a crush, crush is a ghoul, ghouls eat Humans, and wants to eat him, both of them end up in an "acident" involving pipes
Kankeki gets a few of Rizes organs (his crush) and becomes a half ghoul (he gets her Kagune (the thing that makes ghouls ghouls)) *A few sidestories later*
He gets Kidneppt, tortured and then kills the Torturer
He tries to get stronger to protect the people he cares about, ends up in a fight against the strongest Anti-Ghoul-Guy and kinda dies
Story of Re : Kankeki is now Haise a Dove (Anti-Ghoul-Guy) and trains other doves, but these Doves have "Kagunes"(I will explain Haise laiter)
*They do their job*
Haise remembers his past (yes, he had amnesiea), tires to help Ghouls
*read the rest of the Story cause no spoilers*
Art: Insert iDubbz saying "Hey,that's Pretty Good"
Characters
Haise: After losing to the strongest Dove, kaneki got Amnesia and became Haise, in the first few arcs he and Kaneki "talk" to each other and he kinda has a split personalitylater Kanki takes controll again.
Enjoyment: It was good, BUT the ending was horrible
I won't spoil anything
After a big disaster kankeki tries to get everything back to normal, and he does and it was beatifull,
He killed Rise (don't question, just read it) And the quote from the first few chapters of Tokyo Ghoul "If someone would write a Book about my life, it would be a tragedy" then rabeling about how everything is split into for example : Killing and getting killed etc. and then he gets devoured by the disaster (that he cause) and it it beatifull, he dies to save everyone, but he doesn't die what ruined the whoule endning
If it just ended with Kaneki dying to save everyone it would be a 9,5/10
But now it is a 8,5/10
Good Night

Tokyo Ghoul:re review
Tokyo Ghoul Re was pretty phenomenal. The story starts off pretty slow but once it picks up it doesn't stop with the enjoyable plot progression. Characters are all pretty interesting and none feel like throwaway characters and are given ample amounts of character growth and screen time. The only character I had a real problem with was the final antagonist, Furuta. He seemed far too perfect of a villain during the final arc, constantly having the upper hand and getting his way at every step. I didn't have an issue with the plot progression but it seemed crazy to me how good of an antagonist he was and how effective he was being at opposing the main character. Otherwise, I think he was pretty good of a villain despite the series making him seem untouchable until the end. The story arcs in the series were all amazing, especially the arcs at the middle point of the story. The only gripe I have with the story was the final arc of the series, the final arc seemed like they were trying to rush the end of the series and push the main character to face off with the final villain. To me it didn't seem as fluid as the other story arcs, however I generally liked the ending. The ending of the series in my opinion felt deserved, despite all the main character's efforts, the problems of Tokyo never magically went away. Sure his efforts created change that made his situation better, but never did the problems of Tokyo become 100% fixed, which I liked.
My main complaint with the series was the art during fight scenes. Some fight scenes were really all over the place and it was quite hard to tell what exactly I was looking at during some scenes. This is the only low point of the art.
Overall the series is pretty amazing and well worth a read.
