The Flowers of Evil review

I was caught very much by surprise by this manhwa. Brother/sister relationships are very tricky to get right - they usually come off super-cliche-forbidden-love, so terribly trite that it's just unbearable. So I usually stay away from brother/sister for that reason. However, I thought I would give this one a shot, and I'm glad I did. It's incredibly twisted, psychological, and moving - it's like it's the darker side of love, not to mention forbidden for more reasons than just "we're siblings." The characters have so much more than that going on between them.

Story - 9/10 because it's purely character-driven and the characters are amazing. There's also a big twist at the end that I won't spoil, but it really explains a lot of the characters' twisted motivation and ties the whole story together really nicely with a lot of poignant symbolism. The ending is also just... shocking. Just wait. It won't be what you think.

Art - 9/10, beautiful on so many levels. My only criticism would be that faces look similar. But they're all so gorgeous it almost doesn't matter. Every scene is drawn with loving detail, very beautiful. The extra drawings at the beginning were some of the prettiest I've ever scene... On a very specific note, I love the eyes. So much!

Character - 10/10, the characters of this manhwa are incredibly well-developed and unique. Se-Wah and Se-Joon mirror each other in a way that's at once disturbing and intriguing. All of the characters, at some level, have a darker side that emerges in the most powerful ways at the most dramatic of moments, and it really makes you catch your breath.

Overall, just a fantastic psychological drama. Lots of mystery and romance too, but it will definitely make you think about the truth of love. When is it acceptable, what defines love, what is society's influence on love. Really, really intense.
