Akatsuki no Yona review
So basic premise is a princess - Yona - on her 16th birthday witnesses her cousin/childhood friend/crush - Soo-Won - kill her father/the king and so runs away into the night with her other childhood friend and loyal bodyguard - Hak. From there she decides what to do and chooses to seek out the legendary four dragons and also picks up a genius pretty boy along the way to ensuing adventures!

Now imma tell ya’ll right now that this is my absolute favourite manga out there and even the anime isn’t half-bad and is a good way to jump into the manga. There’s adventure and mystical/fantasy/magic elements that get introduced piece by piece in a way that you can’t know how it’ll all work together. Mizuho Kusanagi is quite masterful in how she has constructed this story, built up this world and the mythology surrounding it, but still manages to make things flow, even after several years of serialisation. Often stories can get lost through time.

It’s also supposed to be shoujo, but it really doesn't read like a typical shoujo books. That said, the romance element of the series has been one of the most well constructed build-ups I've read in a series. There's no rush, and the relationship is one of mutual trust and appreciation, but also utter dumbassery because both main leads are idiot fools in love. Like only the best love stories are...

The mangaka is so clever in how she develops characters and treats basically every main “villain” or “antagonist” as grey because there’s always a backstory. Particularly the main antagonist - Soo-Won. And also the way she develops the relationships between the main cast - the Happy Hungry Bunch (inside joke) - is a gradual building of trust and love through various sweet and VERY PAINFUL storylines, while making it witty, charming and exciting to behold. I could go on but this is just an amazing series and Kusanagi-sensei knows how to rile up a crowd.

Really good, definitely give it a read. At this time, it's ongoing and a really good point in the story (ch 191-ish??) to binge-up to, so we can all experience the wild ride!

Hinemosu Notari Nikki review
Tetsuya Chiba is a major japanese artist, mainly known for his now cult series “Ashita no Joe”, that started his career over 60 years ago. Now retired, he only aspires for a quiet life but still receives some call from Big Comics asking him to make a new series. Reticent in the first place, he still ends up convinced to make Hinemosu Notaru Nikki, a 4 page autobiographical manga, when he hears that some of his old friends like Shigeru Mizuki and Fujiko A. Fujio were still active in the medium but mostly by the fact that his editor is a young and beautiful woman !

This title is basically separated into two distinct parts :
the first is about his childhood in Manchuria after the end of WWII and the defeat of Japan, his family get caught in the middle of the civil war and has to face persecution while trying to get back to Japan safely. As much as it is a serious topic, it never falls into misery porn and instead shows us the candid perspective of a child who can’t really process what is happening around him. As a 4 pages manga, the events are told in burst of memories but manages to be poignant nonetheless, from the time they had to eat his adopted rooster to survive, how his father left them, drafted by the army and how he perceived his return as a weakened man, the time where they had to hide in an attic for 3 whole weeks and was only able to draw to pass the time and entertain his younger brothers by making picture book, his time on the steamboats and on crowded trains where he saw some of his friends die in front of him ;all that to end on his return into his father’s birthplace, seeing the joy on his grandmother’s face to see them alive again.

“Here is a safe place where I don’t have to worry anymore did I tell myself while letting my spirit get completely relaxed. I was listening to the voices of adults, sometimes far, sometimes close, with an indescribable gentleness. Like that, we fell in a deep sleep… It had been so long”

The second part of it is set in present time and is more light-hearted. We see Shigeru Chiba being a simple old man and it is very refreshing to see him that way and destroys the myth of these legendary authors that are just like everyone. Some of these stories are just daily events like going to the hospital to take his pills, him taking the train or making food. But the most interesting parts are the ones where he gets reunited with his old friends like Takao Saito, Go Nagai, Jiro Tsunoda, Leiji Matsumoto, Fujiko A. Fujio and many others. From how he lived the death of Shigeru Mizuki and remembers his last moments with him, the commemoration of the death of Osamu Tezuka who was a major aspiration for him, to going golfing or going to the hot springs with them. And this in these parts that I think Hinemosu Notari Nikki is a must-read as it is touching and allows us to get a completely different side of the personality of these legendary artists who remains clouded in mystery and inaccessible for us : seeing Mizuki making fun of Chiba’s baldness or Saito showing off after making a hole-in-one is one of the best treats you could get after following these people for so long.

Shinseiki Evangelion: Koutetsu no Girlfriend 2nd review
Evangelion spin-offs are unfortunately well-known for being almost completely unlike Evangelion itself. Iron Maiden the 2nd, Girlfriend of Steel 2 or Angelic Days, however you wanna call it, is no different. This doesn't mean it is completely worthless, however, as the standard of Evangelion spin-offs is in fact so low (see Piko-Piko) that this is, quite possibly, the best Evangelion spin-off manga of them all.

This is a cute, fairly straightforward shoujo romantic drama/comedy story. Shinji is rewritten in a mostly standard shy shoujo protagonist, unaware of Asuka's growing affections for him. Asuka is the most well-developed character here, she is also reformed into a mostly standard tsundere, but she gets some interesting development with Rei and Kaworu. Rei, as you might expect, is unrecognizable and is instead a pretty standard moe girl, more and more interested in Shinji and jealous of Asuka. Kaworu is slightly present as a sort of inter-dimensional matchmaker, though he doesn't appear much, another common feature of Eva spin-offs. All of them fight for Shinji's attention, and, amazingly enough, this is the only Eva spin-off in which one of them does win his heart. Touji, Hikari and Kensuke are also present, and have some development among each other, and not just around Shinji. Much drama and some minor Eva mind-screwing does happen before that, of though. But if you are looking for anything deeper, your only bet is either the NGE anime itself (the manga's success at this is debatable) or even some fan-made stuff like RE-TAKE.

The art is okay. Nothing exceptional, but not at all bad or subpar. What might initially surprise readers is that it is *extremely shoujo*, which might come as a particular shock since most Eva fans would be accustomed to the more shounen style present in ISRP or Sadamoto's manga. Some pages are really beautiful and the characters do have a lot of expressiveness, but it does take some getting used to.

I could be wrong, but this look like it was one of the artist's first professional works, and it seems to have been successful enough to have launched her into a successful career. Overall, this is a quite enjoyable manga, if you are looking to have the Evangelion cast in a lighthearted setting and just enjoy seeing them together.

Mangaka Chou Zankoku Monogatari review
What really goes on in the mind of mangaka when they draw manga? That is the premise of Super Cruel and Terrible Tales of Mangaka, Terrible Tales for short.

This manga doesn't follow a specific plotline, but rather an episodic, short stories that detail what goes on in the lives of mangaka. The chapters really dffer from a mangaka that just had a baby to the terrible, and dark lives of horror mangaka. It seems that there might be some actual truth behind this joke and does a good job of causing you to cut some slack on the mangaka for not doing a good job on a certain manga. Despite being a gag comic, it does a good job of using a different style that seems linear, but breaks in the middle to tell you what's going on. This is helpful since there are sudden time skips that need warning. There is also an issue with enjoyment. Certain chapters just aren't funny or become repetitive with certain gags (i.e. Stalking, assholeness, etc).

I have to say that this isn't for kids or anyone that can't take jokes. There are some scenes that contain nudity and at points spouse abuse. So if you can't stand to see a woman get hit without getting angry, maybe not for you.. The last chapters are pretty real and give all people who dream of being mangaka a wakeup call. I really enjoyed the last chapters feel and somewhat surrealness. The main problem with this manga is if you haven't dabbled in the most genres of manga you won't get the jokes. Certain jokes revolve around certain manga like Beserk and ecchi manga, at some points Mazinger. If you don't know your manga, it may be difficult to follow.

When you talk about gekiga-like manga or gag manga, art skill isn't a must. The art style has a very "what the hell" attitude and can be either a brilliant masterpiece, or a grotesque pile of crap. There are some crude scenes but from the cover alone you should be able to tell whether you will actually enjoy the manga. The facial designs are quite basic and look like a third grader made the screentones and shading, but a funny third grader. All in all, not that bad a job, but if it wasn't a gekiga it would be in trouble.

There is no certain set of characters, but a series of episodic mangaka that are editors, ero-mangaka, horror mangaka, etc. Most characters tend to be one sided and stereotypical, but there is some truth to it. It makes you think, "What was this guy thinking when he made the boobs so big"? and such. Most, if not all the characters are assholes and get portrayed as antisocial pricks who despise their careers or people are full of themselves.

All in all, this manga is not for everyone, especially if you've succumb to moe and cutesy manga. This is a recommendation to everyone, but if you're a fan of dramatic picture and gag manga that make you go "WTF?" then this is the manga for you. Make sure you read up on your manga before you read this.

SISCON ANI TO BROCON IMOUTO GA SHOUJIKI NI NATTARA review
Story: 7. I think it's good. It's niche as F because it's literally a story of a brother and sister dating and kissing and stuff. Taboo as hell. So I guess if that's what gets your rocks off, then damn this is real good lol. I didn't score this story higher because the pacing was a bit all over the place. I felt like it slowed down quite a bit near the end, and the middle was a bit too quick... Also it's still odd... called me old fashioned lol. The reaction from the parents wasn't how I hoped. But hey, I love a good love story and this was written pretty well for its content. So I'm happy with a 7.

Art: 9. Fantastic art, not sloppy and lots of detail and great scenes. I really like the multipage style where a scene can go across 2 pages. Very cool.

Character: 8. The writing of the two main characters and the way they interact with others (school mates, parents, etc) is very good. It's literally what made this story believable, and gave me a sense of sympathy and emotion to the characters. This delicate subject would be easy to blow open and have the story go to shit, but good job author, you really did a good job here.

Overall, I gave it a 7. It's a well written story for a such a taboo topic, and it's a love story so hey... But I couldn't stop reading. I can't say that I felt emotional or turned on from all of it, but I was much more curious as to what the author was going to make of the story. This kind of stuff is super challenging to someones writing ability and I was quite impressed.
