THE NEW GATE review
OK, after 10 tomes worth of wasted time I came here to leave a warning. So lets start.
1. Story. A completely OP MC in a fantasy world, that came to life after being a MMO game, with all NPC's gaining will and mind of their own. Not a new thing to see, so the main question is what does MC do in this whole new world, where he is basically a god? The answer is "pretty much nothing". For the most part he just ran around trying to gather his party of support NPCs that he used to have when he was in MMO (what kind of MMO was that, if you could just solo it with bots?). There is a hint of something big and sinister with fate of the world being threatened, but in those 10 tomes even "big and sinister" mobs don't stand a chance against MC, so it doen't really feel like a threat. Also this novel doesn't bother with explaining things, so sometimes you will have to accept something for granted (like this MMO becoming a death game - noone ever explained it, noone announced it, people just KNEW that they will die if they are killed in MMO. How, why, and how it even happened? Who cares.) 2. Characters. A cast of completely one-sided templates. MC is OP as hell, but not only he rarely uses his power, he HIDES his power level for the most stupid reason of "not drawing attention" that he, obviously, fails miserably, and this gets even more stupid when everyone around him starts to discuss how cool he is. Basically, most conversations about MC are using words "amazing", at wich point I want to ask author to stop with this self-inserting praise. Also, despite having a GF he was more or less intimate with, he continues to pull this "dense anime protag" card, wich is not only hardly believably, but irritating. Other characters are not better - here is your mandatory "loving pure waifu" option, here is your "secondary pure loving waifu" option, here is your set of "loyal to the death comrades" options. All of them look more like cardboard cutouts, not real personalities. But it is not even the worst part of it - when we get to villains it gets even worse. Bad for the sake of being bad, abusing power just to be even worse, not having any redeeming quality to get to the bottom. Yep, that is your average villain here. While I could ignore it with villain-NPCs, when I read 10-th tome, which is a big flashback to the times of MMO, I just could not take it anymore. Can you imagine an adult man, who is so obsessed with some random noone who is just a TOP-1 player in this MMO, that he would go into yandere mode, ignoring the fact that his actions will cost him life? I can't sorry. Neither I can imagine PVP guilds surviving in a "deathgame MMO", where you can just die or even if you survive and get into real world - get jailed for murder. 3. Art. A lack of it more likely. For a novel, that mainly focuses on "MC awesomeness" combat feels really messy. Lots of moves are shouted out, lots of everything is flying - but it all feels more like a mess or a waste of time, cause we all know, that OP MC can never loose to a trash mob, nor said trash mob can do anything at all. Descriptions of all the abilities are basic and lack any artistic efford invested, so I found myself skipping most of the combats at some point. If I have to rate this whole mess of a novel I would call it "readable" and nothing more. 4. Enjoyment. Welp, I would say this one should not be read for enjoyment, it is better at killing time (and to be honest, this is the only thing this novel is good at). Overall/TLDR: read it if you have a lot of spare time, nothing to do and zero expectations. In any other case it would be a huge waste of time. |
THE NEW GATE review
As I write this review I have read the first 4volumes of the LN, those are the only ones released/translated to English so those are the only I am capable of reading/reviewing.
Upon reading some of the manga I became interested enough to go to the LN. A good choice, the LN is much better than the manga, more detail, better development and ofc sheer content. The LN does have a down side of constantly introducing new items, objects, and concepts. Not to mention making the main character out yo be god tier OP. However it is an enjoyable read. The story follows Shin who after defeating a final boss is transported to the same world, 500 years later. He survived an online death game (similar to SAO I assume) but was alone unable to escape. All the NPC's now have emotions and feelings which are that of a living being. Upon Shin'a arrival he the rewards for defeating the final boss are noticed, he is now OP beyond belief in a world that has digressed since the time of players. Shin sets out to learn of the new world, a way back, and meeting his former ally's from 500 years ago. All while hiding his identity as a "High Human", and existence refered to as God-like rulers hundreds or years ago. Art: as an LN art isn't as important, however I'll give it an 9. Most of the monster and characters illustrated are very well done. The elves are made out to be very attractive (very much so intended), while monsters are made out to be what they are —monsters. I think it gives pretty good character design and illustrates all relevant characters. Characters: I'd say this is an 8, I like the main character Shin but I sometimes he annoyed me a bit. He questions to often how much power he should use, and after 4volumes he still has not tests his 100% power enough to use it well. Also it has a possibility of going all harem >.<, hoping not but..... Anyway this far it is showing signs of romance. story: the first 2 volumes it was a solid 7-8, fun to read but nothing ground breaking. However volume 3 was different, was a 9-9.5 IMO. Has very good development and an epic battle, and tons of feels. If you tempted to drop the LN, read up to volume 3 before you do so. You won't regret it!!!! The 4th volume wasn't spectacular like the 3rd but I feel stuff is in the works... Hoping the 5th will hype me up. I want him to be exposed to the world as a high human, sooon soooon ;). 8.5 for story overall Enjoyment is an 8.5, it's worth the read. I never felt bored reading it, enjoyment leads into my overal of yes an 8.5 (Grammar/spelling gl mwahahaha) |
THE NEW GATE review
(Everything in the review occurs in the first chapter)
"The New Gate" is your average Isekai manga, with a pretty nice twist to it, it starts off with a world exactly like what you see in Sword art online, a death game where people were trapped in a VRMMORPG, the only escape being to beat the final boss, unlocking the logout button; "The New Gate" starts it's story off with the main character defeating the final boss, he decides to let everyone else log out first so he can be the last. Just as he goes to logout, a gate in the final boss room opens and he is transported to what he believes to be another world, but in actuality it's just the game 500 years in the future, which he later finds out. The main character, "Shinya 'Shin' Kiritani" has an extremely modest personality, being incredibly strong but acting like he isn't, just like in other series which include an OP main character and him being transported to another world, he decides to hide his strength to "avoid an uproar" such is the same in series like "Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku". It has a range of supporting characters which all have their own abilities and personalities. I highly recommend reading this if you like Isekai, OP main characters, lots of potential waifu's and etc. |
THE NEW GATE review
I actually cant believe im the first to review... i mean this is a very well made and well thought out manga. its actually one of the manga im constantly keeping an eye on. now about the story: its not an original manga. goes about the story of video game turning real; HOWEVER it is one of the best in the way that it is so realistic, even if the main character is OP. overall it is well made and very fun to read. it does have certain plot holes but their so small and few that it doesnt matter much if at all.
I recommend this to any and all manga fans ^_^ |
THE NEW GATE review
Starts off a real 8/10 till around the late 30 chapters (When our protagonist is invited to the Castle). From here onwards however, I feel it just continues to get unneccesarily slow and then, even futher on, it gets unneccesarily convoluted. At this point the score continues to drop for me and by chapter 52 I feel like I'm reading a 4/10, hence my middle ground score of 6.
If you want to read, I would recommend stopping at 30 if you are fine without an ending or if you just want to slog through those most recent chapters. For an isekai shounen it's definitely above average to start but it ends up dropping too far at the end, a real shame. |
THE NEW GATE review
Reading "The New Gate" was like watching a super good AMV or compilation video...
You get all the buzz out of all the best bits of all your favorite series all crammed together! There is HEAVY influence from both SAO & Overlord, as well as I suspect some pretty heavy influence from Log Horizon (A personal long-time favorite) and the blend that "The New Gate" manages to achieve is just wonderful. The MC is extremely likable, the OPness, doesn't feel cheap or pointless, the world is complicated and vast enough that the MC's journey of discovery feels natural and fills the reader with curiosity rather than just throwing convenience into his lap. On top of all this...The character designs are (ahem) *Top Quality* hue hue... Honestly i'm one of those people who thoroughly enjoy's Isekai but having watched a LOT of trash isekai animes (smartphone, cheat magician, arifuerta etc) I can hand-on-heart say that this one does it BETTER. I'm a big fan of anti-hero/villain tales so for me the Overlord series is way up there, but for those of you wanting something more "loveable" and lighthearted, but still having a wonderful combination of cool fights and powerful characters, lovable love interests and a fun, relaxed but not bland MC... The New Gate is the one for you! |
THE NEW GATE review
**THIS REVIEW CONTAINS INFO THAT CAN BE VIEWED AS SPOILERS FOR (..) CERTAIN PEOPLE!**
Okay, so to start off i'll briefly explain what is going on: You may get the impression that its a ,,Sword Art Online" copy for a first glance, but its NOT one! (This contains parts from the first chapter i think) We start off with the main character beating the final boss ,,Origin" of this death game called ,,The New Gate" which trapped thousands of players inside. When he finishes his job (which actually looked pretty easy) he waits for everyone to log out, and plans to be the last one to do so, but then a door appears behind him, and he decides to enter it because why not. He gets teleported to a place which turns out to be the game, but after 500 years he beat the final boss. ( And also he cant log out again :/ ) And thus his adventures start- -- Story : 7 I gave it a seven because its not that bad, but it has some tiny plot-holes, not that they cause so many problems, but they are still there.. -- Art : 9 I couldnt decide if i should give it a 7, 8, or 9 because the art-style looks a bit clumsy, but still really detailed. I still went with the 9 because of those details. Oh boy, i looked back at some pages with action and they were pretty amazing -- Character : 9 The characters show some development, and are really relatable and show some logic (Im talking about the new chapters, i mean at my time its only near chapter 30.. so yeah i mean those chaps). I dont know what more should i say, maybe they are .. colourful? -- Enjoyment : 10 It really depends on the person, but so far im enjoying it.. so 10/10 (Not sure what people mean if they like vote 7/10 on this, it really is just a ,,yes" or ,,no" question..) And yeah there you go, hope you'll start reading it too! |
THE NEW GATE review
After clearing a VRMMORPG that became a death trap to its players, Shin is transported 500 years into that fantasy world's future. Its inhabitants have picked up the pieces, adapted, and live normal lives. The world feels far more real than in most isekais, owing in part to its diverse and colorful characters and the bare minimum of "gamey" status screens.
Players like Shin are considered legends, but some still remember them first-hand. It's the support characters (former NPCs) who gained sentience and are seen as living legends themselves. Imagine the world falling apart around you and wandering for 500 years hoping for your master to return. Imagine being on the receiving end of such humbling devotion. Shin's reunions with them are both heartwarming and melancholic, and are my favorite parts of the series. Not the least because there's a compelling conflict between them wanting Shin to stay and him searching for a way home. That being said, I'm still not sure where New Gate is going in terms of the overarching story. Aside from reuniting with his companions, he mucks about with adventuring and gets involved with the country's royalty. Some of these mini-arcs feel drawn out and too much like a typical isekai, especially when Shin gets to flex his power before awed onlookers. Yet the power fantasy elements are bearable and Shin is very likeable, so I'm willing to look past them. |
