No.6 is one of my favorite books series.

Story - 10

In the "future" of 2013, after a huge war, most of the people around the world live in what they call city states.

Our main character, Shion, is an elite in the city of no.6, and after saving a stranger (Nezumi), he is stripped of his position as an elite, because the boy that he saved was actually pursued by the authorities of the city.

Several years latter, he gets again in trouble and he is sent to the correctional facility of the city, but Nezumi rescues Shion before he is sent there. Now Shion will discover that no.6 is not actually utopia as well as the true reality of the world.

The main story focuses on that, the life of Shion outside the city and his findings about no.6.

There is a sub-plot, which is the relationship between the two MCs, Nezumi and Shion (their friendship and romance). Since it's not the main focus, it would be not fair to label this as shounen ai, due to the fact that the rest of the mangas are not labeled as romance just because there's a relationship. (And I actually think shounen and shojo ai should be just romance, but then again, different mindsets exist) So, if you don't like this issue, you know what to do.

So this gets a 10 because I find that the world the author has created is really amazing, and because the relationship between Nezumi and Shion it's a really special one. It's one of my favorite pairings ever.

Characters -10

Each character is complete and unique, and you get to know some background story about most of them. Did I already say that the two protagonists are amazing? No, right? Well, they are.
The character development of Shion and Nezumi, individually and as a pairing, is also another of the best aspects about the books.

Enjoyment - 10

I enjoyed these books a lot. Proof: I finished all the books in a bit more than one week. The books are short, 150-200 pages each, well written. Some of them are slow-paced while others are intense, but every one of them is truly enjoyable.

Still, I warn you, they are not completely flawless, since they include some unexpected fantasy. (Deus ex machina?)I didn't find it too bad though.
(You'll understand if you read the books)

Summary (TL; DR)
- Story: 10 (It is a fantastic dystopia)
- Characters: 10 (All of them are complete and unique; lovable MCs)
- Enjoyment:10
- Overall: 10
- Shion and Nezumi are more than friends, but unless you are an homophobe, you won't mind this/will find this really adorable.

I would recommend this to anyone in general, but specifically to the people who enjoy dystopian-type sci fi.

The last thing I want to say is that this is a hundred times better than the anime (and it was not a bad anime), you don't really need to watch it, go for the books instead. If you liked the anime, you will enjoy the books. There's also a manga, but it's not finished, sadly.

Thanks for reading! ^^

This is my first review, but I felt entailed to write a review as there is none and this novel was really spectacular in many aspects. I will start off with a warning - if you are not open-minded of male on male relationships then don't read this. This novel may not be hardcore yaoi but it contains shounen-ai scenes that may not be tolerable for tight-laced male on female enthusiasts.

Story: I will not write a summary as there is already one provided for you on this website. I rated the story a 10. I am not a hardcore sci-fi fan so I am not really qualified to speak on that aspect of the story; but for those in my position that may have indulged in sci-fi novels once every blue moon than you will be fascinated by this story. The whole post-apocalyptic world that No. 6 is based on is magnificent. This story brings out the maliciousness of human nature, and at the same time brings out that human kindness is out there. Not everyone is cold-hearted and greedy. This is what you may call, "regaining hope in humanity."

From the anime, many viewers were turned off by the shounen-ai scenes between the two main protagonists in the story. This is understandable as not everyone has the same likes, but for those of us that enjoy male on male relationships then this novel is for you. I gladly enjoyed indulging myself on the special bond between Sion and Nezumi. Like I mentioned before, this is nothing hardcore - but the relationship doesn't lack anything. The best I can describe this as is an unbreakable bond that traspasses romance.

Characters: I rated this section a 10. The characters in this story were unique and weren't cliched. I enjoyed their personalities and their sarcastic way of communicating with each other. I'm sure you can get a smile or two from reading their conversations in even the most dire situations during the novel. All these characters have unique backgrounds and they're all united by the unfairness and struggle of survival.

Enjoyment: I rated this a 10 as I highly enjoyed this novel. I wished from the moment I started reading this to be able to indulge into it until I was finished - but reality called and I had school the next day. Every chance I got I used for reading this novel. This only happens when I highly enjoy something so of course I was obliged to rate this a 10.

Overall: I rated this a 10 as well (yes I rated everything a 10 - I'm only a human that enjoyed this, give me a break). The only part of this novel I wish was different was the ending. It was not bad don't get me wrong, but I would have hoped for a more detailed explanation of the aftermath.

Well this was it for my first review. I was surprised to find no reviews on here so I decided to give it a go. I hope if you're planning to read this novel that you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

The human emotions are a very sensitive thing to begin with, but what if you had grown up not knowing of the negative emotions? A place where there is no crime, and everything is perfect? Welcome to no. 6, a 'Utopian' town where everything seems to be perfect.

STORY: 9/10
The story follows the journey of two boys, Nezumi and Shion, along with many others. It is a story that can at first be hard to fall into (for some, at least), but as you continue reading, it's almost impossible to stop yourself from being interested. There are a wide variety of emotions in this manga, which is a big part of the story itself. If there were no emotions, this story wouldn't have gotten far. From character growth to plot direction, this manga is strong in its story and overall has a very good one to it.

ART: 9/10
There's nothing much to say about the art except for the fact that it's truly pleasing to the eye. It was amazing on its use of body language, facial expression, and more. Someone could read this manga without any dialogue,
and still possibly make a story out of just what they see.

CHARACTER: 10/10
One of the most important parts of a show (not including story), is its characters. No matter what you watch, it is hard to go through a show or manga without having any character development or importance. In no. 6, the characters were what this story was almost entirely based around. Shion's growth as a person, and the relationships between everyone showed its own uniqueness. Nezumi and Shion are two very loveable characters that you can't help but love - as well as (most of) the other characters.

Enjoyment: 10/10
If we're going to go personal with enjoyment, no. 6 was something that I fell in love with and grew deep connection to. From the characters to even the town(s) it is placed in - I almost felt as if I were there. It was a manga that could make you laugh, smile, and cry at the same time. It is a story that I will keep in my heart for a long time. I am personally happy have discovered this manga.

Overall, I give it a 9(.4) out of 10.

-----------------------
This was my first review, so I apologize for any errors here and there. Besides, I wrote it a bit tired.
But, I felt the need to write a review for this manga simply because of my enjoyment, and how it managed to go far above my expectations from what I was expecting. I can proudly say that this manga is one of my favorites.

No.6 follows two boys from opposite ends of the socioeconomic ladder as they try to reveal the secrets behind a so-called utopia. Although it's only 35 chapters long, I'm giving it a 10 because it's incredibly well-done despite its length. Read below for the full review.

Storyline: 9

To some extent, No.6 is just another dystopian story--perfect society with a dark secret, disillusioned citizens, etc.--but the inner workings of its dystopia are both unique and unexpected. Its plot is well-developed and easy to follow. The only reason why I don't give a perfect score for this category is because some moments within the manga feel a bit rushed.

- - - - -
Characters: 10 (Mild spoilers below.)

The backstories and personalities are well-crafted, and everyone who is introduced has a role within the story. Character development is executed well. The issues that the protagonists face, as well as the personality changes they undergo, are believable and never left unexplained.

I also have to give props to this series for being one of the few I've read that aren't exclusively BL, but portray a same-sex couple as realistically as they would a heterosexual couple. (Note: No.6 is not a yaoi manga. It does, however, have shounen-ai elements.) It doesn't dole out fanservice. Nezumi and Shion's relationship isn't established to pander to BL fans; it's there to represent a legitimate bond between two characters--one that develops over time, and through mutual understanding of each other's strengths and weaknesses. There's no masculine or feminine binary, no "husband" or "wife" imposed upon Nezumi and Shion. They're just two characters that happen to fall in love.

Art: 10

No issues here. No.6 is beautifully illustrated and skillfully paneled. As well, the character designs are memorable and unique without being over-the-top.

Enjoyment: 10

All the factors mentioned above culminate in a series that's difficult to stop reading once you start. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a good action/adventure/sci-fi manga.

(WARNING! THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS! READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!)

No.6 is a manga set in a dystopian like era, where supposedly there are no crimes or hardships to speak of. It's centered around two boys, Shion (a top-ranking elite) and Nezumi (an escapee from the special security area), as their lives slowly change after their first fateful meeting.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Story 8/10: I found myself mesmerised in the world of No.6 and it's conflict between the outside and inside borders. The inner being the home of ignorance and security while the other is overwhelmed with devastation and filth. This is an important point in the story for it plays a key part in the characters' motivation later on. I liked how we were given little details of information as the plot progressed, answering questions that the anime failed to do. (Spoiler alert!) However, there were a few parts that I wished were more elaborated on. For example, Elyurias' character. It felt like she was clumsily added in as an afterthought. Being briefly explained as the 'Forest God' who wanted revenge on No.6 for killing her people. I wanted to go more in depth with her goals and hatred for humans, instead of getting a quick summary of her existence.
Art 8/10: The art style was a bit simplistic, though not in a bad way as it suits this kind of story. It's pleasant on the eyes, and a joy to look at.
Characters 9/10: Shion and Nezumi are fairly complex characters. They both have very distinct personalities, and I feel is an outcome of their upbringing. Shion being raised within the borders, he lived a life of peaceful bliss, never having experienced a single hardship. Although, this doesn't seem to make him happy as he feels there's something missing. This feeling grows and gnaws at him after he meets Nezumi, a seemingly stranger whom barged in his world and changed it significantly. This, of course, makes Shion drawn to him and want to learn more about him. On the other end, we have Nezumi. A child born from the Forest tribe. We learn that No.6 killed his family and people by burning them alive and that an old lady who had raised him after that, drilled it into his mind that No.6 is filled with sinners and deserves to be eradicated. These two major events is what created the character we have now, a boy with an everlasting hatred towards No.6. And so, Nezumi had to learn how to survive on his own from a very young age, this caused him to not give out his trust easily and think that bonds were just burdens. But then Shion comes and completely destroys his beliefs, making him turn into a big walking contradiction. Of course, this scares Nezumi because of how easily the other boy had done it. These two characters are like books themselves. They're intriguing and I never seem to get bored of them. Although, I would've liked it more had we explored Shion's dark side whenever he would witness a loved one hurt. For example, in the cave, when Nezumi struggles against Sasori, Shion snaps and wraps a wire around Sasori's neck to strangle him, only stopping after Nezumi forces him to. He has also shot and killed a guard, who had in turn gravely injured Nezumi. Shion seems to take on a different personality when he does so. This is proven when he murdered the guard, becoming shocked and frightened once he had pulled the trigger.
Enjoyment 9/10: this was a thrilling ride that had left an empty void in my heart when I had completed it. It made me want to find out more of what happened to Shion and Nezumi, I didn't want to stop reading about these interesting characters. Either way, I highly recommend this to anyone interested in sci-fi/dystopia with shounen ai elements.
