I used to have a friend described by another friend as "better in doses". He was okay, but volatile; basic neutral evil archetype. "Ikigami" is certainly in that category.

If you thought the reasoning behind Battle Royale was the most extreme measure you've ever heard of, you've not heard of Ikigami. Think government lottery Death Note. The art is very good, a nice style that is easy to take in. Usually. The story can get very dark at times, humanity at it's least human dark. Themes like that are best taken alongside something cute and funny to decompress, and not binged in one sitting.

I've read up to volume five and that's been several years now. I'll just say it, I had some very dark days a few years back and I really didn't want to risk reading something like this while fighting depression. And yet I want to finish this series very much. Like an addict needing a fix.
