Bastard review

At its core, Bastard is a wild ride which blends in wonderful characters and an extremely suspenseful plot to bring a clichéd yet fresh story to one of the best thrillers I have read so far. (No spoilers)
This is my first review so I'm always looking for things to improve.

Overall - 8:

Plot / Enjoyment - 10:
Despite its flaws, what Bastard does great is its excellent pacing of its plot. Given a short exposition right at the start, you are immediately thrown into the story. Although having a simple story (I'll get into that), its complex plot along with countless tense moments is what draws your full attention. After every climax, you are greeted with a satisfying conclusion, yet there is always something happening which draws you back in, wanting to read more. This masterful pacing is what makes Bastard so enjoyable and re-readable.

Story - 7:
One of Bastard weakest points, the clichéd story is what makes me bring the overall score down from a 9. It's a story with predictable points which relies heavily on bad writing tricks. Now, the story is NOT bad, as it enthralls it's reader to its extremely unique and fresh concept which the plot helps to enhance to a great extent. The skillful mixture of the two genre's, Horror and Romance, is what saves this story. Neither feels forced or independent of each other and this leads to a story, despite being clichéd, is still intensely captivating.

Art - 8:
Nothing much to say about the art, it is simple yet used to help emphasize the sinister, gritty nature of Bastard. The use of muted and desaturated colours parallels with the ominous story and dark themes. The interesting thing is, there are only two panels a page. This gives the reader time to slowly read through and think about the story as they scroll, as well as to help show the many emotions of the characters making use of the countless close-up shots of faces.

Character - 9:
Bastard is efficient in its use of characterization which helps the reader to get immersed with the characters and like them. Most characters are fleshed out and even those who are only in the story for a few chapters, all feel very polished. The motivations of the protagonist and antagonist are relatable which allows the reader to empathize with them; We understand why they are doing what they are doing, which is helped by the constant evolution of the characters. In this fast paced, thrilling story, the characters evolve just as fast. Despite being a short story, the characters feel realistic and their flaws feel human. The main conflict with the protagonist and antagonist, along with the subtler one between lesser important characters helps to progress the story. However, there are a bunch of cheesy dialogue and the protagonist's main love interest can be a bit bland.

Final thoughts:
I am conflicted about Bastard, on one hand, it is a creative story with excellent characters and well-paced plot. On the other hand, its clichéd story really hurts its score. Yet, it is this clichéd story which allows the characters to grow and plot to shine. Overall, this is a quick and exciting read which you will not regret reading.
