Sekai Oni review

(This is a review for an ongoing manga, and is subject to change.)

When I look for something to read/watch, I look for three things.

1. Good story concepts.
2. Interesting characters.
3. Originality

Because, aren't those things what make a good story?

What initially attracted me to Sekai Oni was actually the cover art. The covers are all gorgeous, and, much to my delight when I started reading it, there are some really outstanding illustrations within. The only issue I have with the art is that, well, it's pretty inconsistent. Some of it looks top notch and some of it is weird and barebones. Luckily, the good illustrations and awesome character/creature designs outweigh the bad.

Not only are the character designs outstanding, but also the characters themselves (for the most part). There may be one or two characters that a reader may not like, but each character is so infused with personality, both good and bad, that it is easy to care for them, even without realizing that you do until you reach certain points in the story.

The story itself is hit or miss. I liked it, but there were moments where I found myself disappointed by a direction the author took the story in, or the over the top ridiculousness of some parts. Speaking of which, this story is both tragic and hilarious. There will be parts where the manga gets so melodramatic, but then you see something like a bad guy with a dick growing out of his nose (yes that's a thing) and you can't help but laugh, no matter what is going on. Still, the manga is serious enough that drama lovers will enjoy it too. It's almost surreal at times, as if the author took one base idea and then stream of conscioused the details. It works well.

This manga covers a lot of bases. There is action, fantasy, tragedy, drama, romance, and comedy. There is dark subject matter, such as a child being raped and abused. There is also sexual subject matter. One of the main characters is a nymphomaniac to the extreme. It is actually rather difficult to describe who would like this manga, as even though it is zany and ridiculous, the tragedy of it all can still hit home when you least expect it. In general, I recommend that anyone give this a try.
