With just two chapters Hirano Ryouji manages to outdo the whole main manga, giving us exactly what it was missing - worldbuilding and characterization.

Overcoming the difficulty of telling a story with limited lenght, Tomioka Giyuu Gaiden is a compact yet memorable tale. It lends us a window into the life or regular folks that inhabit the world of Kimetsu no Yaiba, which is something the main manga failed to do. The story also has more impact on the reader, as the characters don't feel just as a throwaway plot devices. Not just Shinobu and Giyuu who are portrayed more likeable, but also the entirely new character that is the focus of this story. In fact, if this was the first part of the Demon Slayer manga and the new character would be the main protagonist instead the whole manga would most likely be significantly better.

The author of this Gaiden did a good job of taking the original arstyle of Demon Slayer and transforming into a higher quality drawings.

Overal, this short spin-off shows that the setting of Kimetsu no Yaiba has potential, the main series is just marred by subpar writing.
