NaNa review
Much more than a manga, a lesson in life!

Nana, Nana, Nana how to describe in a few paragraphs all my feelings on this manga which, I think, will remain my favorite all kinds included.

Shōjo or Josei?
Many define Nana as a shōjo however I would say that Nana is a josei because a shōjo is intended for a rather young female public whereas a josei is intended for a more mature female public. I started reading Nana at the age of 18 and have been reading it regularly ever since (currently over 80 times). 80 times would you tell me? Yes I did and yet each time my analysis changes slightly. I think we need to step back in order to appreciate all the subtleties of the characters. You can ask 10 different people what they think of this or that character, they will all answer something different.

Shattered stereotypes
Despite a world out of the ordinary for most of us: fame, music, rock, punk, Ai Yazawa has brilliantly managed to show all the human complexity. All the clichés and stereotypes with which we constantly live, especially in France, are shaken.
Some topics covered:
- love in all its forms
- love between two people: can one love several people at once?
- adultery
- friendship
- family
- dream VS reality
- sacrifice
- glory
- hope
- forgiveness

Imperfect characters
Ai Yazawa shows us all the facets of men, all their fragilities.
If Nana Osaki with her punk look seemed to be strong, imperturbable, independent, she shows as the story progresses her weaknesses, her doubts, her doubts that she has trouble managing due to her past.
On the other hand Nana Komatsu seems unstable, fragile or even superficial. However, as the manga progresses, she becomes the rock, the person on whom one rests.

Nana is a surprising manga because the characters themselves are constantly evolving. We are used to putting each human being in boxes: he is kind, he is beautiful, he is strong, he is intelligent, he is... However Nana proves to us that human beings evolve, learn or not from their mistakes, continually seek to be happy, to make others happy.

Is Nana depressing?
Nana like her characters cannot be placed in a category. The story is sad but only if we see it from a certain perspective because it is also very funny. To be honest it was one of the mangas that made me laugh the most, we recognize Ai Yazawa's humour.

A story that holds us in suspense
The manga is currently on break since 2009 and has a total of 84 chapters or 22 volumes. 84 chapters rich in emotions and twists. We quickly learn that the story is told by Nana Komatsu thanks to flash-backs. An unexpected event shakes the lives of the characters and it will be necessary to wait for volume 20 to understand what happened. Meanwhile the manga keeps us in suspense, the characters are continually confronted with their desires and their uncertainties.

This manga is above all human, it makes us think about our dreams, our behaviour. He invites us to ask ourselves what we would have done in this or that situation. We can call it the magic of Ai Yazawa, the magic of Nana.

Kimi ni Aisarete Itakatta review
(simplified and compressed TL;DR at the end since this review might a little long)

You really need to be into a certain type of manga to enjoy this.

This a manga highly based on the person's tastes and I'll be honest, it's definitely not my preferred manga but I can still understand how it can appeal to other people.

If for some reason you enjoyed Metamorphosis/Emergence or other dark reality psychological works, you might like this. If you enjoy light-hearted, innocent manga, I'd recommend staying away from this.

---

This manga is about the dark, horrifying, disgusting side of school-related reality that nobody wishes to be true but one that we know might be true, even if it's not talked about and the psychology of the characters inside of this harsh reality.

It follows a school girl who, in middle school, was being taunted and bullied for being 'uncool' or some other nonsensical reason and due to this, she grows into someone who becomes part of a type of group that she once hated, an elitist, stuck-up bully group. She's forcing herself to insult the type of person that she once was. She thinks to herself that what she's doing is wrong and that she shouldn't bully someone that she once was. But she can't stop because of her thirst for attention and acceptance. Thus she continues on, in this wretched, messed-up world, slowly deteriorating her mind.

Later, she comes to hate what she deems to be fake or ingenuine attention. She becomes jealous of normal, healthy families. It's often sickening but you still feel pity or maybe even sympathy for this girl. She could've had a good future, but because of what she was put through, she's forcing herself to make decisions that she doesn't have to make, forcing herself to think what she shouldn't think. Her situation in life is horrible and the more negative and harmful thoughts she has, the more her mind breaks. She transforms into a girl with bad circumstances to a girl who puts up a front towards some people while lashing out towards others and slowly becoming insane, flipping moods constantly which indirectly and directly causes everyone around her to lose their minds, transforming rising stars of the world to broken lunatics. This repeats itself over and over again until she eventually, breaks.

I really didn't enjoy this manga. I'm fine with works about dark reality but the reason I disliked this work in specific was because of the reasons and methods that it shows that dark reality. I know it's real, I know that some people have gone through this, albeit maybe not to this extent, but I know it's real and out there. It's simply the act of trying to read through all of this harsh reality that makes me queasy.

However, that's mostly my opinion. There are some aspects that I can really appreciate. And for that reason, I'll talk about the positives.

The side characters. More specifically the girls of the elitist bully group. They're horrible. In this situation, I'm talking about their personality rather than the way they're written as characters. These people are horrifying, but after some time, my opinion of them changed. When they're first introduced, they're introduced as the stereotypical gal girls that the author sets up for you to hate. But because of this set-up world and what the main school girl went through, they suddenly go from the 'You should hate this character' into more of a realistic group. When you take a look at them, they aren't drawn how other generic pompous gal girls are drawn. They look like normal girls of a normal friend group. They seem to care a lot for each other and the only reason why they seem like jerks to us readers is only because they just quickly assume scenarios at first glance. They don't have the backstory of these events, they're just making claims based on what they see, not what they hear. When one person does something that can be viewed as caring and nice, the others would often join in and some may even try to find a scapegoat for all the problems where they don't know the full story. They're quick to talk on someone's back, quick to change sides, quick to shift the blame, which is why they're so horrifying. Horrifyingly real. The author could've easily just made stereotypical bully group #2 but they didn't.

Now the hook. The hook of this manga was one of the biggest reasons why I stuck through it for more than 10 chapters was because of the hook. The hook of this manga is one of the few parts that I really liked. The first few panels of chapter 1 hooks you in. It gives you questions that you want answers to because of how unique the hook is. Who are these people, why did that happen to that person, what lead this seemingly promising individual to do something like that. What's their relationship. These questions start forming in your head and the more you read for the first few chapters, the more you need answers to these questions. The characters that are introduced seem completely opposite of what you saw in the first few panels. It was able to get me, who likes manga that are pretty much the complete opposite of this, hooked into the story and characters through questions rather than something like forced exposition or an out-of-the-blue sympathy backstory.

Overall, this is a manga about the psychology of the characters in a dark and demented world. If you can't handle or don't want to read a manga about dark reality, look elsewhere. Otherwise, try at least the first chapter and go from there.

extra: This is realistic enough to say that there are probably some people who might relate or have related to some of the parts of this. If you're bullying someone, try to see the bigger picture of what you're doing. If you're on the receiving end, don't look for drastic forms of revenge. Look on the positive side, don't be jealous of another person's situation, see what you can do for yourself.

-----TL:DR-----

This is a manga about the darkest side of reality. It talks about a girl whose mind deteriorates because of her circumstances both in her family and in school. Her mind becomes messed up and this affects every other character around her, eventually leading to a group of messed up characters making messed up decisions. It's a manga completely based on dark realism and pushes that genre while still making it feel realistic. It's messed up but sadly realistic in both the characters and the world they live in. Steel yourself if you decide to read this

Underdog review
Well this was a below average manga, with an interesting story but awful development and more to it, the greatest disappointment was that it was axed midway, it might have been a good manga but it was cut short and the story left unfinished, if it weren't have been axed it would be worth around 85-90 chapters. Not recommending to watch it, only reason is that you will not enjoy it at all when the manga stopped midway and unfinished.

Story:
(Spoilers - but well you can just read review and pass the manga)
The main character has a very less existence in real life andf being often teased as "Ghost boy". He later encountered a lady while he was running away after he threw tabasco sauce on a child's face. The lady then takes him to an office and introduces him to a tournament in which he would win a billion dollars.

There were 8 rounds in which a competitor should kill his opponent indirectly i.e. without hurting or directly killing him else it results into death. Moreover if competitor tells about tournament to third party, violation of rules resultant death.

In round 1, MC encounters a serial killer who had already killed three girls in past. He takes all information of MC, kills two more girls in subsequent way by arrows from crossbow and traps MC and makes him traumaterialised, then he tries to kill MC's sister, MC had became serious by noiw and made some moves, but all was going according to the opponent's plan. Opp. traps MC to police by trying to kill his own sister and gets him arrested. Soom at the end of 11th day he is realeased and got to know about his sister's condition and what the opp. tried to do with her. He then sets a trap for opp. where a detective kills opp. but the MC was trapped as his sister was there. In the end of scene a professor kills the opp. whom the opp. cared but shot her just before the detective comes, the detective shoots opp. and prof. and opp. falls off a building.
The MC wins and tells everything to the detective who indeed worked for the tournament's organizers and inserted an injection to kill MC, but instead MC was set on a repecharge round and there it goes shittier.

At the end of the manga, it shows that the opponent of tournament's second round is and story is shut!!!!

Junai Strip review
Alright, let me start this review by saying that I am usually not very into shoujo. There are very view shoujo manga that I actually like. At first Love Strip seemed like your average cliche shoujo, with a guy who is about two times bigger than the heroine, a childhood freind romance (sort of), and a heroine who's brain is seemingly filled with nothing other than "He is so cute" Oh my, he loves me" and "Kyaaaa".

The story is in one word: sex. Literally there is at least two sex scenes in every chapter. It starts off with the heroine being a "nerd who isn't intelligent and needs help from a perverted bishounen" Who might I add, hardly even HELPS her. He basically focuses more on her breasts than her actual grades. I mean he somehow always finds a way to either grope or rape her.
You want to have me tutor you?- Time to have sex.
You got a question right? - Time to have sex.
You got a question wrong? - Time to have sex.
You miraculously got into the school? - Time to have congratulations sex.
Your going to die soon? - Time to have sex.
The world is ending? - Well then, I think it's time for some goodbye sex.
Think I'm overreacting? When you read manga, you'll see why. Because I honestly cannot see how this is "cute". If anything it's disgusting and revolting. To the point where I was actually laughing at just how idiotic it was. The bishounen who I can't even remember the name of says he "loves her" but really, it's merely sexual attraction. I mean, throughout the whole entire manga, did they ever once have a NORMAL conversation? Or even a conversation at all that wasn't about sex or just him teasing her? Did he ever once say anything about her actual personality that he liked?
At one point she grows a backbone and tells him that he's not even teaching her ( which she was right on. For once.) and that he's only having sex with her. What does he do when he hears her say she won't be his sex toy? He throws a hissy fit and says he won't teach her anymore. I honestly cannot even comprehend how anyone could call that love. Love (to me at least) is where your happy just talking to each other, you don't need to touch them to be excited. What was happening in this manga was not love.
On another note, the art was a bit strange but pretty good. It wasn't really unique, but it wasn't horrible either.
I did not enjoy this manga, and if you are looking for a good shoujo, then I recommend something like Torikagoshou no Kyou mo Nemutai Juunintachi, not this.

*SPOILER-FREE*

Three young girls in love triangle. Yuri fans will probably enjoy it, but what about more neutral readers ? I think the answer is YES

Story - 9
The premise may sound like a generic love triangle angst-festival, but there are a lot of things that make the plot stand out. Each of the girls has a secret and views the events differently. We get to see all 3 girls struggle to keep their trio intact, while also diving deep into their personalities and thoughts. All of this influences their actions and how they perceive and react to each other. While the story is a bit predictable in the way it progresses, it doesn't take away the pleasure of any of the many emotional moments.

Characters - 10
While every single character is interesting and well-written, it's the trio that ultimately draws the reader in ( like it's supposed to ). The best part about the girls is how they differ in how much they know about each other and what they have no idea about. This makes diving into their heads really amusing. Each girl has a unique personality, secrets and misconceptions about the others. It feels liberating to see them fall prey to their mistakes but ultimately manage to realize their faults. The subtleties in their interactions can be really amazing to see, especially for a guy.

Art - 8
I like the character designs and the style, but there just isn't anything particularly unique or jaw-dropping. The art does it's job well, but it doesn't feel special, though it doesn't really bug me at all

Enjoyment - 9
The manga is consistently fun to read, with lots of interesting developments and likable characters. Highly enjoyable from the first chapter to the last

Final score - 9
This manga has a lot of good points and it manages to deliver the premise flawlessly. It has some small issues that I could easily forget, but there's still a massive difference between this and a masterpiece, so this is why in my opinion it deserves a 9 out of 10 rating
