Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria review
The actual premise of the story is very simple. It's a story about how the wishes of people can become distorted and how our own lack of belief in our wishes takes shape into something grotesque when in reality our wish was something much more simpler and much more attainable.

The main protagonist Kazuki Hoshino is invested in his daily life of a normal highschool boy when suddenly someone who calls herself Aya Otonashi declares herself Kazuki's enemy which begins the insane yet heart touching story.

The characters are hit or miss. But the growth and development they get makes them very endearing and you feel a sense of fulfillment watching them grow and come to terms with their reality. I'd say they are too smart more often then they are too stupid. Like absolute braniacs and it's hard to keep up with the dialogue sometimes with the things they are able to think of from seemingly mundane and normal places.

With the prose of the story and how it's written you often don't know from which perspective the story is being written in until later on which makes it confusing as you have to re-arrange the actual events that have happened. It's one of my first light novels that I have been reading so it was also confusing to know who was saying what so I'd have to often re-read sections. I'm not sure if that's just a light novel thing or just the way Hakomari was written.

Overall if you're into romance, mindfucks, and psychological thrillers I think you should AT LEAST give volume 1 a try.

Pupa review
The story starts off promising, since I enjoy incestious relationships, horror/gore, and demonic creatures. Yet the premise is pretty much the only good thing. The story went downhill due to unnecessary plot twists, which actually made the whole thing much less interesting.

The art wasn't pleasant. The artist has a unique style, which I appreciate, yet did not enjoy. Still, nothing too bad.

The characters are even worse than the wishy-washy plot. Utsutsu is the mediocre big brother, who's pretty much in love with his sister. Yume is the cutesy little sister, who returns his feelings. Doesn't sound that bad, yet the characters are unlikable to dreadful. The father is a major asshole who beats up his wife and small children for fun. Even after the divorce , he continues tormenting his son. Yet, later in the story, he gets portrayed as a cool, badass character. Now I often like the "villain" over the the hero, yet this light hearted portrayal of the abusing parent is unacceptable. Utsutsu's class mates are cute, yet again, just bland and dispensable characters that can't even be called "supporting".

As you've proably guessed, I didn't enjoy this manga. I've started it because everything I've heard about it sparked my interested, yet ended up continuing reading it just because "meh, maybe it get's better". Didn't happen.

I've been thinking for 5 minutes if I should this give an overall rating of 4 or 3. Decided to go for 3 because I wouldn't call this "decent". If you're into the genre, you'll probably like the gory parts, nothing else. My recommendation: skip it.

Banana Bread no Pudding review
Banana Bread no Pudding is one of those manga that you can say you read it and be proud of it. Because if you want to act smart, this one is perfect for you. By tackling themes such as philosophy or repressed sexuality, you can totally see it as a piece of artistic literature.

It tells the story of Ira, a strange young woman who keep on acting like a little girl. To avoid being alone after the marriage of her sister, she must marry someone. After confessing to Saeko, her best friend, that her ideal husband is a gay man wanting to hide from society, she decides to make her believe that her brother is gay. So they get married, and here start the troubles.

The story is rather interesting. But it's especially an excuse for the author to make a psychological study of her own characters. They are all different and each have their own set of issues. First there is Ira, the protagonist, who is more than weird. She has the mind of a little girl and doesn't know how to live by herself. Either one is fascinated by her, or one finds her more than annoying. Because yes, Ira is a very interesting psychology case, but the way everyone around her is destroying their own life for her can be pretty frustrating.

The character of Saeko is particularly touching. You pity her throughout the story, seeing her struggling for her friend or sinking into depression after she learns that she can never be loved by the man she fell in love with. It's a pity that there was no real conclusion for her, she really deserved to know more about her feelings.

Now for Saeko's brother and Ira's husband, I have to be honest: I don't like him. He spends his time lying to Ira not to protect her like Saeko, but for his own interests. So I struggled to get with it when the author suddenly decided that he would have a sincere love for Ira.
To summarize; each of these characters deserve a session at the local psychiatrist.

Regarding the art style, the artist has a very interesting aesthetic. This is typical of the usual 70s shoujo, with the glittery eyes, slender legs and screentone effects. However, there is a rather mystical atmosphere that mixes both dream and reality. The scenes from Ira's imagination are particularly pretty. However, I am a little disappointed by the sets that are mostly composed of white backgrounds, which makes it difficult to locate the characters.

Now I don't want to spoil, but the end was quite disappointing. I was expecting a real conclusion, but instead, I had even more questions. I would have loved to know what will happen to the characters, but I guess the author kept it to herself. Well, who doesn't love some mystery?

BBNP was a real surprise. At first you think that you're reading a romance manga and then you discover that it's actually a psychology essay. It subtly addresses polemics who are still relevant, such as homophobia or mental illnesses, which was something very innovative and unusual for the 70s. Sadly, it's not perfect : Some characters or situations make sometimes the reading a little less enjoyable and you get lost easily between what's real or not. But I don't think BBNP should be considered as an ordinary manga. No, it has to be seen as a work of art : beautiful, yet complex and deeply intellectual.

Hotarubi no Tomoru Koro ni review
I'm quite surprised that with the popularity of the When They Cry franchise that Hotarubi has been quite overlooked to the level of it not even being reviewed on this site at all. As of the available chapters in English of Hotarubi no Tomoru koro ni it seems like you'll need to read or watch at least up to the Festival Accompanying Chapter of Higurashi no Naku koro ni and knowledge of Umineko no Naku koro ni isn't exactly required. Unlike its previous two entries Hotarubi strives to accomplish something just a bit different, yet something extremely familiar.

If you've followed the series even somewhat you're aware of the basics of a group of people being trapped in a seemingly inescapable scenario that gets way out of hand really fast. Hotarubi follows in the footsteps of Umineko by following a cast consisting of a family going to a remote location and tragedy unfolding - unlike Umineko, however, the family is much smaller and the location is much more realistic. The family in question isn't rich like the Ushiromiya family of Umineko with a mansion, in fact, they're visiting the house of one of their recently deceased family members, a grandmother, to prepare for her wake - we find out her fortune has been drained and she holds nothing left financially for the rest of the family. Quickly, tragedy strikes and it goes from a regular trip for mourning to a survival horror story - our cast finds themselves in a literal Hell on Earth. Returning from the Higurashi cast is Miyo Takano, who helps somewhat guide the family along their way. You won't find the bloodthirsty murderers in this that you saw in Higurashi, instead, you'll find supernatural occurrences that may not look as they seem and may have you second-guessing the nature of everything the cast finds or what happens to them.

Ryukishi07 outdid himself with the story this time - this is personally my favorite among all of the When They Cry entries. I think one of Hotarubi's biggest strengths is actually the idea that is presented that many other isekai series don't. Yes, this is in a way, an isekai as the world around the family is warped and they become trapped within. You see one of the family members, a grandson named Yukito is your obligatory NEET character who finds a second wind in the new world. Hotarubi actually touches upon why exactly does Yukito feel this second wind? Why does he actually feel the need to help others when in normal everyday life he's just reclusive? What drives this man? From arguments within the family to reconciling and realizing that working together is the best - the family holds all kinds of different tensions within them and each is different in their own way: an aspiring actress, the hated stepdaughter, the cool-headed analyst, one who steals with good intentions. Their philosophies on life clash as this world takes them for a turn, what they find will surprise them, the answers they find aren't always going to be the ones you expect. And just what is Takano's role in all of this? Knowing Higurashi, I shouldn't trust her one bit.

Generally, I think survival horror is hard to come by in anime and manga and this does it right and where it has a few bumps it recovers. You have your tried and cliche "kill her, she's not the one you knew anymore" line for example - but in the grand scheme of Hotarubi, that's nothing. The way it handles its world and the actions of each character are both logical and rational. I hope this series ends as strong as it began.

Happy Negative Marriage review
Happy Negative Marriage is a manga that follows similar themes to Ryuta Amazume's other works. That being of a Mature, Slice of Life focusing on a believable romance, with some kind of hook to it. This time that hook is an arranged marriage.

Keitaro Satou is just some guy who turned 30. Nothing particularly special about him as he's just like a lot of us who coax through life, never attempting to venture out of his comfort zone. That is until he is forced into some arranged marriage meeting (Omiai). Of course he's has an aversion to this situation, but ends up going, to not disappoint his parents and it is there that he first meets Akio Shimako. So there you have it, a summary to your typical 'love at first sight' kind of romance; though it is somewhat peculiar, since an Omiai is usually used as a plot device to separate the main couple, not bring them together. But apart from that minor peculiarity it's your standard romance with: the pair going on dates to deepen their relationship, friends constantly getting themselves involved and... Not much else. Really, as of the 2nd volume the story has been rather straightforward. In other words it's falling into the usual trappings of some of Ryuta's other works. Both the story and characters.

About Keitaro... what can I say... Well for one, he's similar to a lot of the protagonists Ryuta-sensei comes up with. So he's average but can show his worth when the need arises. The same can be said about the, heroine Akio and how similar in cuteness & quirks she is to the other heroines. Not really a bad thing, mind you, just very familiar. However my main complaint is on how dependant Keitaro is on others. Sure that means that side characters are much more involved in the story, than in the mangaka's previous work "Love is for those Over 30", however it just makes Keitaro that much less appealing.

Speaking of comparisons, I could not help but compare this to the American live action Rom/Com "40 Year Old Virgin", but with a dash more Japanese and a bit less Comedy. Those who've seen the movie will understand what I mean. Now those who are wondering why I've yet to mention the art; well it's not surprising since I expect anyone reading this to have read the previous mangaka's work (Nana & Karou, Toshiue no Hito, etc.) and have an overall idea of what to expect in that department. But for those who haven't, let's just say that the art is incredibly well done and really brings out the subtle quirks in the characters.

Well that sums up my thoughts on this piece. Chances are my opinion on this manga may change but as of now I feel that it has potential to be something really interesting, but right now it's barely doing enough to be more than a solid romance.
