Resumen
Asagiri Aya is a young girl who has fallen victim to bullies at her school. Looking for a way to escape her troubles, she looks to the internet for distraction, when a mysterious website called "Magical Girl Site" appears. Simply viewing the page is all it takes to hurtle Aya headlong into the deadly world of the Magical Girl Apocalypse. There, it's fight or die, against a seemingly endless array of savagely adorable, frilly-skirted killing machines, each armed with magical powers and an unquenchable thirst for blood and chaos.

**spoiler warning**

The idea/concept is really nice, but all the writing is very horrible and overall disgusting.

Who makes the protagonist and love-interest lesbians and fall in love, only 50-100 chapters in to reveal that they are blood-related twins? Are we romanticizing incest now? Is literally everyone just ignoring that they're twin sisters??

Next is the male characters, I gotta be honest there is no positive male character that isnt disgusting at all. Most of the men are all abusive. Every gay male character was seen as a sexual harasser/rapist. And the only black man in the ENTIRE manga is shown to be a pedophilic gay rapist. And the way he's drawn uses racist stereotypes which is not good!!!

The nongay male character, Aya's brother? Sexually abused her. And he was redeemed at the end. Why was he redeemed?? Why are we supposed to sympathize with a sexually abusive brother who apparently has a god complex?

And the boy who had a crush on Aya in the beginning of the manga?? That was her actual blood-related father in disguise!! What! Why would you write that!

The only good thing about this manga was making one of the main characters a transgirl. She's seen as a girl and not a boy. Her best friend genders her correctly and so does her mom. Her mom is accepting and loving. I didnt like that she was used for the "only boys can defeat the King" but she didnt defeat the king as another magical girl used a sex-change magical girl ability to defeat the king.

Shit writing!!! Excessive usage of shock means that the writer hasnt thought out or fleshed out the story good enough, and has to resort to shock value.

Oh man. How do i even begin in expressing my thoughts regarding this story ? As in like, regarding ALL of it ?

This manga story was picturing itself as the NEXT Puella Magi Madoka Magica but in reality, this manga is the magical girl equivalent of that Nutcracker movie. You know, the one where the rats are Nazis aka Nutcracker The Untold Story/3D.

There are many problems with the story.

1) I know humans are supposed to be evil as not each or every one of us is a perfect saint but is mankind really supposed to be THIS evil ??????

Most of the antagonists or in layman terms, villains, in OTHER more well-known magical girls are evil ENOUGH but the acts that these girls had to suffer through just seems like OVERKILL !!!

One has to wonder whether the creator of this manga feels DIRTY in writing or illustrating all of THIS !!!!

2) I know that this manga was considered by many right now as a contender to Puella Magi but i truly am sorry as i find this manga absolutely disgusting !!! All of the chapters are legitimately disgusting !!!!!

Seeing all of those cute and innocent young girls either turn into psychotic and insane monsters or losing their will to be happy and enjoy life just makes me sick to my stomach !!!!!

Also, the implied idea that other manga artists would be potentially inspired by this, as in like other people would want to replicate it, it's just.....just.....GAH !!!!!!!!!!

3) For a manga that's all about magical girls, people who read this complete story are NOT gonna think about young and cute teenage girls using magic to fight the bad guys and save the day !

They're just gonna think about all the terrible things that the worst of humanity are capable of doing !!!!!

Now, one might wanna argue that the creators of this manga are trying to take people into the darkest regions of humanity so that the happy scenes seem happier. A true vision and work of a great and up and coming artist.

But sadly, i find that the manga is coming across LESS like he wants to make the readers feel good and MORE like he just wants to stand out by using shock tactics.

4) I just wish that this manga and its related side story need to add a lot more substance to itself than just shock value.

Shock is nothing without some form of intelligence behind it, and that's what draws everyone in. I know that the author is not REALLY trying to draw "everyone" in. Only just the gifted few who can see how unique he is.

But honestly, by trying to be "unique" instead of being himself, he might be like everyone else trying to do the same.

Conclusion

While one might like to point out that the author just wanted to dive into the dark moments so that the happy moments seemed all the more important but judging from the content, i could see that the author didn't understand the happy moments. Heck, he didn't really understand the dark ones.

Shock value is fine if the purpose outweighs the offense. It's supposed to provoke the viewers, giving way to a positive idea or even make readers feel better by laughing at how shocking it is.

However, it takes a lot of thought and a lot of skill to pull off correctly. When you focus too much on the negative without really exploring or understanding it, you get something that makes people not only feel dumber but also kind of dirty. The intent to bring something positive gets lost in the need to make yourself feel important.

But honestly, the same can be said for also being TOO positive. That can come across as mockingly condescending. Somewhere in-between, there's a balance that's tricky to hold, but can still be accomplished.

How will one know what negative things and what positive things to focus on? Well, to be honest, i don't actually know the answer to that question.

But i DO know is that It's different to everyone. People always go through different experiences, so they're always inspired by different things. Even those things ALWAYS change. People, ideas, even places. Just always do your best and make an effort in trying to get inspired by those who understand said concepts better than you.

Before i dive into spoiler zone, here is a spoiler-less review of the story so far.

Story:

The story centers around magical girls who all become eligible to be made into one after living a life resembling a hell.
Now i know there is a lot of injustice happening all around the world, but if you consider level of cruelty and/or hardships these girls (from elementary up to high school age) must have gone through, plus the always increasing number of such ill-fated GIRLS, one might wonder what kind of f-d up world they live in?! (Story is set in modern japan)

Speaking of cruelty and various wrongdoings, the way the story shows these elements is simply non-believable! I've seen many sad, bullying-involved, abuse related stories, but there is a point when you feel bad for the character since the hardships they go through seem real, and then there's this story where cruelty is so over the top, it simply can not be left hidden or unnoticed! Yet here they do! And this once again makes you wonder if there is any justice and good left in this world! You hardly believe that such cruelty is possible, that there are so many wicked people around you. Despite the level of suffering girls go through, it's hardly touching since it's so unbelievable and cliched.

Magical girls get magical "sticks". Some are OP (overpowered), and some are average or even sh@t. No skill or talent, guess it all comes to "luck", don't expect balance patch or something.

There will be predictable plot twists, some minor drama, but in the end you will have more wtf's than actual answers.

Characters:

just like the story, characters are not completely dull, but usually leave you with an urge to slap them very hard for all the stupidity. There are Many characters, their actions predictable, roles predictable, tastes predictable... Boring.

Art:

Unlike his previous work, art clearly improved in MSS, but pile of SH.. is still a pile of SH.. No matter how realistically drawn. There is blood, there is gore, but only sometimes. I'd hardly recommend it for those few scenes solely.

Enjoyment:

The weird part. I'm still reading this, not because i'm forcing myself, but because i really want to see where it goes and how it ends. (Mostly, how much worse can the story get?) If you read few chapters and FEEL like wanting to know more, do read it, but DON'T HAVE HIGH HOPES.

******SPOILERS AHEAD*************

So far the society in the world shown here is incredibly (and by this i mean "over the top") insensitive, intolerant, cruel, stupid, evil and unjust. Same methods of bullying at schools, same levels of "nobody gives a damn", unimaginable cruelty from very young children... the author clearly hit his head on something blunt at a young age, and/or must be smoking some weird stuff to come up with a setting like this.

Back to the story. It seems girls main goal is to stop or survive the *cough* walpurgis nicht *cough* Tempest, or to say otherwise, the end of all the things. WHY would they want to survive? Most of the girls have short lifespan left. Surviving the end most likely means being alone while everybody else dies - no logic in that.
Prevent tempest and save the world? Why would anyone want to save such shitty world. At this point i'm rooting for the tempest to end this miserable world together with soon-to-dead-anyway-magical girls.

Stupidest plot so far: why give away sticks if you take them back shortly after?
Why only girls, since boys can use sticks too?
Why not just wait for the tempest to just happen? What's the point of this circus?
Should we care for magical girls? They're nuts!

I have a strange relationship with "edgy" anime. By edgy I mean, anime full of gore, violence and mature themes like rape, death and abuse. And by "strange relationship" I mean, I don't really like watching them, but I do have a morbid curiosity for it. Anime for me is a form of escapism, I watch it to forget about my shitty life and problems, so I like to watch lighthearted, fun shows, but I can't deny that anime and manga like Mahou Shoujo Site pick my interest by their premise alone.

Still, I rarely watch them to completion, finding their content too much for my delicate sensibilities. That's what I thought it was gonna happen when I started reading MSS. I just wanted to see what the story was all about and didn't plan to read too much. It was late anyway. But once I started, I didn't stop until almost 60 chapters later.

Violence and gore are predominant, but what really gripped me was the plot. It's full of mystery, twists and turns. I'm not sure why this isn't tagged as a Thriller here in MyAnimeList because MSS it's an incredibly effective one. Once you start, it's very hard to stop, each chapter being well-paced and feeding you enough questions and answers to keep you satisfied but still craving for more.

That aside, one of my favorite things about it, it's how they implemented the special powers. Each girl is given a different object which grant them distinctive powers. I can't explain exactly why, but I just love it when a series does that. Sakura Card Captors did something similar with each card giving her a different power-up, as did several other shows, it's not exactly original but it never stops being entertaining to me. Each time a new one is introduced I'm filled with wonder about their capabilities and techniques which enhances the entire experience of reading this manga.

I have read all the current released chapters, and it seems to be close to the end, which is great because I don't think they would manage to stretch this one much longer. Now I'm just hoping for a satisfying conclusion, and this will be a manga I'll recommend for years to come.

This came out around the same time as Madoka Magica and has a similar premise. Despite Madoka's popularity, I would have to say I prefer Mahou Shoujo Site.
While it didn't impress me much at first, the story becomes more and more intriguing and fleshed-out as it progresses. Many of the characters, which read as tropes initially, are given interesting character development. Aya, for example, appears to be a typical "sad, abused loli," but she proves to be very cunning and capable in the right situation. She still hasn't completely avoided the stereotype (largely because her backstory is too pitiful and dramatic to be believable), but her character seems to be going in a good direction. I was also surprised that Sarina, the "typical bully", became such an important character. I also like the
As for the art - I like it, but at times the anatomy gets a little weird. However, it's pleasing to look at most of the time.
As I said, the story shares many similarities to Madoka, but I think it's a little more complex and well-thought-out. It also has some themes that are unusual for a manga of this type, like revenge. It's true that the story has many tropes, like the "mysterious website" and the "manifold misunderstanding" between Sarina and Aya; however, while it follows some tropes, the story also avoids others.
I've given this an 7 tentatively. I feel like the story right now (at ch. 17) is at a tipping point where it will either flourish or fall short.
